“Fashioning Chinese Women” at Los Angeles County Museum of Art was yet another opportunity for our Chu–Gooding team to explore color more deeply. Here, the color palette was designed to support each group of garments and to promote the galleries’ distinctive atmospheres. Background colors that elevate, complement, or contrast each collection. The result of rigorous study of the garments and research from our project team.

Chu-Gooding had the pleasure of designing the new exhibition “Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity,” which opens at on Sunday, June 14th. The exhibition traces the evolution of women’s fashion in response to sociopolitical transitions, globalization, and modernization in Chinese society, from the fall of the Qing Dynasty up through the Cultural Revolution.

As part of the exhibition design, Chu-Gooding employs the traditional siheyuan (Chinese courtyard house) as a spatial concept, chronicling the evolution of the elaborate garments and rich textiles that defined Chinese fashion through the mid-20th century. We have so much appreciation for the curators and staff at , fashion designer Jason Wu, and all of our collaborators who helped bring this exhibition to life.

The inaugural exhibition at the new home of the Oklahoma Contemporary Art Center, "Bright Golden Haze" (2020) explores works of art that use light to create place and identity, both physical and conceptual. The range of artwork includes drawings, paintings, photographs, video, neon, hologram, light installations, and immersive interactive environments, packed into a gallery shaped by fifteen faceted walls. These parameters created design challenges akin to conceiving a sixteen-course meal.

A pop of pink in a bathroom at the Oaks House. Our clients are a young family of four living in a 1940s traditional American multi-story house in the Oaks, a quiet historic neighborhood of Los Angeles tucked up against the Hollywood Hills.

In this renovation and addition, we sought to reorient the primary family levels toward the hillside backyard, explore open floor plan opportunities throughout to release the spatial constraints in most of the existing rooms, and reclaim the attic space to create an extra level for family living and entertainment.

The interior strategies of our work with the UCR Culver Center of the Arts combined archaeological approaches for historic treatments, material and color palettes with contemporary clean-line aesthetics. Richness of materials (from walnut to recycled finish products) was consistently incorporated to maintain a transitional aesthetics for the interior.

The project honored the balance between the institutional usage, digital technologies, historic palettes and desire to incorporate sustainable design choices throughout the project.

In the Harwell Hamilton Harris English House, a full-height library bookcase transformed the iconic painting studio into an upper-level study. The millwork design appropriated Harris’s architectural language to invent a new interior millwork language within the house.
