When Marcos was in Rome, he stood in the Pantheon and watched light pierce through the Oculus.

A single opening in a 2,000-year-old concrete dome. Sunlight moving across ancient walls. The experience of transcendence through architecture.

Simple materials. Profound form. A space that elevates you into a different realm of awareness.

Architecture can transform how you feel, where light, properly placed, changes everything.

Spaces that move you.

Nestled in an eclectic niche of Venice, California this home combines brutalist architecture and Japanese minimalism.

The transformation of the 1920s bungalow involved structural modifications, extensive remodeling, and expansion, including the addition of an attached primary suite and a poured-in-place concrete flexible office space.

One of our Palisades projects sat five minutes from where the fire started.

We evacuated at 11am. Watched the news like everyone else. Waited.

When we returned three weeks later, the house was still standing. A home 800 feet away had burned completely. We had smoke damage, cracked glass from the heat, ash covering surfaces. But the structure held.

We're now installing exterior fire suppression systems linked to the municipal water, the pool, and a new underground supplemental water cistern. Rooftop emitters. Parapet sprayers. Fire foam systems that coat the exterior when sensors detect nearby flames.

This is what building for resilience looks like now.

Great architecture transcends borders. Our team brings experience from Scandinavia's functional restraint, Germany's performance, Japan's spatial philosophy, and California's indoor-outdoor living tradition. This isn't eclecticism. It's synthesis.

What happens when you combine Scandinavian restraint with Japanese precision and California warmth?

Architecture that feels both timeless and distinctly of this place.

One of the questions we return to in every residential project: where does the inside stop and the outside begin?

In this View Park hillside home, the answer is embedded in the plan itself. A sculptural dragon tree anchors the entry, rooted in river stone at the base of the stair. The glass rail preserves sightlines from entry through to the pool and yard beyond.

Biophilic design at this level is not about adding plants to a finished interior. It is about planning for living systems from the start, treating them as architectural elements with the same weight as structure, material, and light.

The result is a home where the California landscape is a continuous presence, not a view you step outside to find.

We recently hosted our first AIA Small Firm Exchange gathering at AIA Los Angeles — and it was exactly the conversation small firms have been missing.

AIA SFx exists to advance the interests of architects in small firms: advocating for their value, providing resources, and ensuring small firm voices are heard at the national level.

The morning brought together architects running small practices for candid, substantive dialogue on business development, staffing, systems, work-life balance, and building a firm that reflects how you want to work and live.

As California's State Representative to AIA SFx, the intention was to introduce the Small Firm Exchange, its resources, and its purpose — and to create space for small firm owners to learn from one another. No presentations. Just real conversation.

There is more to come. If you run a small practice and want to be part of these conversations, follow along and stay connected.

Fire takes everything. What's built to endure is what remains.

After the Palisades and Eaton fires, Marcos walked the sites. What he saw confirmed what building science has long understood: resilience is designed and built into the building envelope, not added later.

Join us June 16 at 6pm on Zoom. Marcos will be presenting a fire hardening case study to the Passive House community.

A space to connect, ask questions, and talk through what high-performance building actually looks like in practice.

In Los Angeles, privacy and openness rarely coexist.

This courtyard resolves that.

A slatted steel gate conceals it completely from the street. You pass through, and the space reveals itself. A rain chain drops into a rock garden. Planting, stillness, a moment of nature before you enter the home.

Floor-to-ceiling glass lines the interior edge, drawing morning light and planted views into the home. The entry, dining, living, family and hall all orient toward it.

Unlike a backyard, it sits at the center of the daily sequence. It ventilates. It brings light and connection to nature into rooms that would otherwise depend on street-facing windows.

The street sees none of it.

The courtyard is not a feature added to the home. It is what the home is organized around.
