It is with deep sorrow we share the sad news that Stefan Lawrence passed away on May 11th.

Stefan founded Twentieth in 1999 and was an influential force on the forefront of an aesthetic movement that became the culture of collectible design as we know it today. Starting with a focus on midcentury modern design, by 2001, he spearheaded a shift to embrace a new wave of international contemporary design. Twentieth’s innovation was to blend an experimental avant-garde contemporary art gallery environment with a design sensibility grounded in classic modernist Bauhaus principles that emphasize craft, form, and materiality.

Stefan’s greatest strengths were his impeccable curatorial eye, which he used to combine objects and environments in unexpected and innovative ways, and his unwavering support and championing of artists and designers, promoting their work and tirelessly encouraging them to explore and expand their creative talents. It is those two qualities that make a great gallerist, and he had them in spades.

The list of artists and designers that Stefan has represented and promoted is long. He could spot talent early, and many creatives that he started working with in their early years went on to become large international forces in the design world.

Stefan was a much loved member of the art and design community, and will be greatly missed. His kindness and generosity was always noted by friends as well as collaborators. His creative spirit and vision had an impact on the world, and his warm personality had an impact on everyone he met.

We will miss him deeply.

Although it may evolve over time, Twentieth will continue to operate under the direction of Daniele Albright, Stefan’s longtime collaborator who has worked alongside him for over 25 years.

Karolina Maszkiewicz is a Polish American sculptor, illustrator and designer living and working in Los Angeles. Her current series of work integrates organic elements of nature she finds in the area, from the mountains of Malibu to the deserts of Joshua Tree, into extraordinarily graceful kinetic hanging sculptures. We are happy to welcome Lois Samuels as a new artist on our roster.
Lois is a Jamaican-born artist who blends her background in fashion and design with a deep passion for ceramics. She has worked with top Parisian fashion houses as Givenchy and Mugler, and graced the covers of major magazines such as German Vogue and American Essence during her modeling career. Later, Lois transitioned into fashion design, where her creations were featured in prestigious publications and showcased on runways around the world.

Today, Lois channels her creativity into crafting unique built ceramics. Her artistic journey includes studying wood firing in Italy and participating in a recent artist residency in Greece, which culminated in her first museum exhibition. Her work has been featured in group shows and various publications. Lois continues to explore and expand her artistic horizons, creating pieces that reflect her diverse experiences and unwavering passion for art in all its forms.

Tristan Louis Marsh is a Los Angeles-based visual artist and designer. His practice is centered on sculptural furniture and lighting that derives its form from biological structures & naturally occurring phenomena.

Currently, he is focused on surface treatment, where he seeks to transform the base material into something unknowable, causing the viewer to pause and question the object’s substance and structure. Marsh’s practice is grounded in a harmonious amalgam of physical and digital processes, placing it at the intersection of technology and traditional craft—where machined parts and VR models are rarely end products, but rather steps in a process centered on the human hand and intuition.

Materials play a pivotal role in the narrative and conceptual foundation of Price’s work–much of which relies heavily on chance as a tool to reveal and encourage unexpected behaviors and reactions. The production processes price develops enable him to push the limits of common places and industrial materials in an attempt to transcend the limits of imagination.

Since graduating from London’s Royal College of Art in 2007, Price has established an international career as an artist and designer with works in major collections and institutions worldwide, including: San Francisco MOMA, Denver Art Museum, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and The Mint Museum, the MKG Hamburg, and Amore Pacific Museum of Art in Seoul. He has also completed several large-scale sculptural commissions for public and private spaces.
