I made my first candle in 2016😎
For those of you just starting, here is what I have learned➡️
More fragrance doesn’t always mean stronger. There’s a sweet spot🍦
Too much fragrance can actually interfere with how a candle burns, smells and performs.
Pro Tip: Candle connoisseurs want a fragrance that fills a room, not an entire home. Fragrance should complement your space not overpower it🌬️
Packaging will humble you.
You will spend months perfecting a candle and then lose sleep over a box being ⅛” too small and a 6 month lead time to fix it🥴
Pro Tip: Don’t wait on packaging, work on it as you work on developing the candle itself🎁
People will copy you.
As soon as your brand starts to get some buzz, you will see it being copied🐝
I have had product development teams from larger companies buy my candles just to reproduce them.
I have seen someone go as far as copy and pasting my personal bio from our website and making it their own story.
Pro Tip: Take it as confirmation that you made something worth noticing. Then keep moving. 🤸🏻♀️
Fragrance is incredibly personal.
The scents people love most are often tied to a place, person or memory, not necessarily whatever fragrance is trending at the moment.
So while you love the scent of fresh roses because it reminds you of the giant rose bush on your childhood property.. to someone else that could smell like a funeral home. 🤷🏻♀️
Pro Tip: Do not take it personal, there is a scent for every nose and having a variety is important🥀
If something can go wrong in production, eventually it will.
I’m telling you right now- the most unlikely, how could that possibly happen, only in a movie type of problems? They will happen.
If it feels like there’s a one in a million chance it could go wrong, it will. Twice.
Pro Tip: Be prepared 👀
Trends are useful. A point of view is better.
Every couple years, the internet collectively decides we all need to smell the same thing.
Ten years is long enough to watch a lot of “must have” scents come and go. I’ve learned to pay attention to trends without letting them dictate what we make.
Pro Tip: The scents that last for your brand are usually the ones that felt the most “you” to begin with.🕯️
