Mañana NO SE PUEDE SER NEUTRAL

From my Greenhouse vertical studio last Fall . Employing the rendered image as the primary tool of design exploration, the studio zeroed in contemporary glass and framing technologies so that the greenhouse’s interiors -and its experiments in vertical farming- would be put on display. The studio saw this as an opportunity to speculate about the organizational, spatial and aesthetic juxtaposition of the systems, orders and economies of seemingly transparent matter, farm layout and labor management. This is the work of Freeland Livingston

From my Greenhouse vertical studio last Fall . The studio is a test case situated at the intersection of architecture and productive landscapes - the highly regulated, technologically controlled production that shapes the land in our contemporary society. The studio sees this not only as an opportunity to revisit the historicity of the representation of nature but to explore contemporary mediations of nature by locating architecture at the nexus between material formations of the so-called nature and technological infrastructures. This is the work of Sizhe Lu Jiehao Wang and Zhao Mu.

From my Greenhouse Vertical studio last semester . This is the work of Nehal Patel The studio centers on mediations of nature situated at the intersection of architectural glazed containers and vertical agricultural landscapes. Students explored this problem through the study and design of a large experimental greenhouse in South Seattle as an excuse to speculate about the potential formal, organizational, and pictorial reciprocities for an architecture that accommodates climates for plants and humans under one giant vitrine.

From my Laminates & Veneers seminar last year . These images are the work of Madellin Gomez and Seojeong Yun . Representation techniques for elevations that go from shading to texture mapping to rendering are used to orchestrate the disposition of cladding by controlling its texture or grain orientation. The class is interested in how software, environment and working habits are inflecting upon our very definition of materiality, and how we can work through these inflections in a creative and thoughtful way. As digital objects are gaining new properties and definitions, this class is interested in how material and digital working methods inflect one another. Thanks to the Formica Corporation for the generous material donation.

From my Laminates & Veneers seminar last year . This mock-up is the work of Madellin Gomez and Seojeong Yun . The class is an investigation into the role of veneers and laminates in contemporary architecture and material production. Industrially produced and faux in appearance, veneers and laminates are scorned by craftsmen for its superficiality and vulgar cheapness, yet it is precisely these qualities that best capture the contemporary construction culture in LA: surfaces that work to elevate but also to hide; surfaces that signify while also actively construct. Students study and wrap commercial-grade, ready-made Formica laminates through the design and fabrication of a small mock-up. Thanks to the Formica Corporation for the generous material donation.

Happy Father’s Day to this great man, who inspired in me the love for buildings and soccer, amongst other things. A fierce tennis player at 80, could spend hours building his model train with his grandkids. This picture is from 40 years ago in the chairlift in Villa Carlos Paz, Cordoba, Argentina. Happy father’s day to all fathers!
