Netflix Egyptian Theater
A comprehensive rehabilitation of the historic Los Angeles Egyptian Theater, including full structural upgrade, complete systems replacement, and restoration of all historic character defining features. Built in 1922 and originally opened as a silent film venue with a seating capacity over 1,000, the Egyptian had been extensively modified over the course of the last 99 years. This renovation returned the theater to a single screen, and rehabilitated significant areas of the interiors with a focus on providing historic accuracy, as well as 1920’s movie palace grandeur. The primary intent of the project is to foreground history; as well as the installation of state of the art projection and audio systems. Technical installations also include systems for the capture and broadcast of events which will be taking place at the venue, both exterior and interior. These technical systems are concealed or discreetly designed to respect the original interior.
Studio 440 was contracted by Netflix as both Architect of Record for the theater, retail building and site; as well as Executive Architect for the complete project. Multiple specialized design firms contributed to interior components, such as the retail installation, theatrical lighting, display and signage, concessions and catering kitchen, and Netflix facilities design standards.
A full structural upgrade of both the building roof, frame and foundations, as well as all historic elements, brought the theater into conformance with current building codes; as well as the California Historic Building Code. Care was taken to insure that all upgrades were concealed and did not alter the appearance of any historic building elements or features.
