Bringing bees back to the homestead today and I’ll tell you right now… it felt right. Got them settled into the Hoover Hives and only took 5 stings to earn my membership card. I’ll call that a fair trade.
Bees do more for a homestead than most folks realize. They’re not just about honey. They help build a stronger, more productive system all around you.
1️⃣ Pollination boost
Bees move pollen flower to flower which helps increase fruit set and often improves size and quality. You’ll see it most on squash, cucumbers, melons, berries, and fruit trees.
2️⃣ Stronger plants over time
Better pollination can mean better seeds and more consistent growth if you’re saving seed year after year.
3️⃣ More than honey
Honey gets the spotlight, but beeswax and propolis are just as useful around the homestead.
Do honey bees make a big difference in a vegetable garden?
Sometimes yes… sometimes not as much as people think.
Honey bees are not the best pollinators for everything. Tomatoes and peppers, for example, do better with bumblebees because they need vibration to release pollen. Honey bees will visit, but they’re not the main workers there.
Where honey bees shine is in numbers. A strong hive sends out thousands of workers daily, and that increases overall pollination across your garden.
The truth is simple.
If you already have a lot of native pollinators, the difference may be small.
If you don’t, adding bees can make a noticeable impact.
And don’t forget the reality.
Stings happen. There’s a learning curve. And bees will humble you quick.
But standing out there watching them settle in… knowing they’re working for you every day… that’s hard to beat.
Would you bring bees onto your homestead?
