Potholes usually start long before you see the hole.

Most potholes form when water gets into cracks or weak spots in the asphalt. Once that water settles under the surface, it starts breaking down the pavement from below.

In Kentucky, freeze-thaw cycles make the problem worse. Water gets into the asphalt, freezes, expands, then thaws again. That movement puts pressure on the pavement and weakens the surface over time.

A weak base can also cause potholes. Asphalt needs a solid foundation underneath it. If the base is soft, poorly compacted, or holding water, the pavement above it can sink, crack, and eventually break apart.

Traffic finishes the job. Every car, truck, or delivery vehicle adds pressure to the weakened area until the asphalt gives way.

The best takeaway? Small cracks, standing water, and soft spots should be looked at early before they turn into bigger repairs.

How often should you sealcoat your driveway?

For most homeowners, sealcoating is usually needed every 2 to 3 years, depending on traffic, weather, sun exposure, and the condition of the asphalt.

Sealcoating helps protect the surface from water, UV damage, oil spots, and normal wear. It also helps slow down fading and keeps your driveway looking clean and well-maintained.
But timing matters.

Sealcoating too often can create buildup on the surface. Waiting too long can leave the asphalt more exposed to cracking, raveling, and water damage.

A good rule of thumb:
✓ New asphalt should have time to cure before sealcoating
✓ Driveways with heavy use may need attention sooner
✓ Faded, dry-looking asphalt is usually a sign it is time
✓ Cracks should be addressed before sealcoating

Not every driveway needs to be completely replaced, but not every driveway can be saved with resurfacing either.

Resurfacing can be a great option when the base is still solid and the driveway mainly has surface wear, aging, or minor cracking. It adds a fresh new top layer and can improve the look and function of the asphalt.

Replacing is usually the better choice when the driveway has sinking, base failure, severe cracking, or structural issues. If the foundation underneath is failing, resurfacing alone won’t fix the problem.

Another big project officially complete 💪

Derby City Paving recently wrapped up a full rip out and replace project in Stamping Ground, Kentucky, just outside of Lexington, and this one was done completely from the ground up.

This project included:
✔️ Full removal of the existing surface
✔️ Brand new base installation
✔️ New asphalt surface installation

During site preparation, our crew encountered clay underneath portions of the existing surface. Instead of paving over a weak foundation, the area was fully dug out and corrected to ensure the new base was solid and built to last before any asphalt was installed.
