Because there isn’t enough on my To Do list, yesterday after I planted a couple of new asparagus I started from seed in the bare spots, I started weeding the bind wind out of the bed. I spent a couple of hours out there and finished a quarter of the patch 🤦🏻‍♀️
The good things about bind weed….its easy to pull and it doesn’t generally let other weeds come up. The bad thing about bind weed…it easily consumes and takes over an area.
Maybe Ill finish the patch before it starts regrowing in the first section 😉
Next year we can start lightly harvesting from this new stand 🤤

FOUR YEARS!
Thats how long Ive been trying to get a hydrangea (my favorite flower) to not only live, but flower, here in Nebraska. Hundreds of dollars spent on trying different varieties and locations in our yard and it appears I finally got it right 💗 This is an Invincible hydrangea.
I bought a Little Lime this year and put it next to this one. Hopefully that one likes it there also.
And then I have the teeniest, tiniest one that Ive managed to keep alive for 3 years but the rabbits keep eating it down to a nub.
Its been a weekend of working in the yard and Im still not done planting out everything! Once I have an empty growing area in the basement, an empty greenhouse, and empty seed packets (hopefully all this week! 🤞🏻), well go for a little yard tour.
Until then, enjoy my tiny little hydrangea buds and guess what color theyre going to be! 😉

Asparagus season has started 🤤🤤🤤
Our old patch finally decided to pop, and its growing handfuls a day 🥰
The new patch is going crazy! One more year and we can start doing a harvest on that patch.
Were slowly getting stuff into the garden. Onions are established, tomatoes got planted last week, and now were waiting for a storm to pass this weekend before getting the rest of the stuff out.
Well be eating fresh, canning and freeze drying in no time!
We have some new things in the garden this year, so it should be a fun harvest 🌱

We took a few days off from farm stuff to celebrate Mark’s 60th Birthday.
I did a surprise party for him on Friday and he was surprised! And then he got another surprise when his daughters, granddaughter, and son in law walked in a few minutes later 🥳 Then Saturday we had the BBQ birthday that he wanted for the Big 6-0.

But today, we were back at it and started getting flowers and garden stuff planted 🥰 I didnt get as much done as I wanted because I had to go into town and vote and then stop at The Garden Center again. And we had to retreat into the house around noon for a few hours because that sun was a scorcher!

We went on a little outing today and caught us some Walleye.
Mark booked us a fishing guide again this year with the same guide we used last year. We maxed out with 6 Walleye and then were on the hunt for Crappie. No luck there so we packed up and headed to lunch at our favorite cafe in Arcadia.
We’ve got enough for 3 meals (fish tacos for dinner tomorrow 😋) and he made fish stock for a later time too 🤤

Busy day on the farm. As our last freeze date approaches, the land gets greener and the greenhouse fills up with color 😍
We did our flower run this afternoon and picked up my pre-order plants from . Most of those plants are basket/container plants. Then we went to and picked up some strawberries, rosemary and lavender for the strawberry bed and around the chicken coop. Also got 15 bags of mulch and two bags of soil.
Came back home and got to work! Added some compost to the strawberry bed, then some potting mix, and a layer of mulch and then planted the berries in it. After that I moved to the chicken coop area. Yesterday I pulled down the clematis (the wind had blown it off the top of the coop again this winter) and trimmed it and the rose bush it had grown into and then used the rake and leaf blower to get a bunch of corn leaves out of the bed. Laid 12 bags of mulch down, then sprayed it all down and watered it in to lock it in place. Once the chance of freeze is out of the forecast, Ill plant the rosemary and lavender. Its what I use for fly control around the coop and it works wonders!
Mark wanted to water the yard between the coops to get the grass going, so he added the sprinkler.
Throughout the day I also worked on a small project for the strawberry bed that Ill share later when its finished 😊
In the next day or so Ill plant up my hanging baskets and some of the pots I have around the property to get them going and established and then itll be warm enough to move them outdoors. In the meantime theyll stay warm and cozy in the greenhouse.
We just finished dinner and now Im off to finish laundry, collect eggs and shower before bed. Headed back to work tomorrow!

Mark finished my birthday present yesterday 😍
We’ve had most of our cast iron in a tub in the garage since we’ve moved here because this was the vision I had for it.
I absolutely LOVE the way it turned out!!

Sad ending to my birthday 😏
Went in the coop tonight to collect eggs and our big, beautiful rooster, Kat (the male half of our lavender Orpingtons named Kit & Kat) was laying dead beneath the nesting box.
The girls must be in mourning because we only got a few eggs today, probably laid before he died.
He had his moments, but he was mostly a good boy and very kind to his ladies.
RIP Kat ❤️ Spring 2021-Spring 2026

I picked up these giant beauties today from Creek’s Bend Family Farm that I pre-ordered a few weeks ago. Plus some extra goodies from their shop (hello dill pickle sourdough!). They’re located in Overton Nebraska if you’re localish and want to take a look. Lots of goodies and more to come!
They’ll stay in the greenhouse until Mother Nature gets her act together. I had originally ordered pink but then was given more options at pick up. And since Ive got more pink petunias coming from The Secret Garden, I went with these dark purple. They’ve got some ivy mixed in too 😍

Overachiever or needs an ambulance? 😂Not sure who decided to double yolk it, but I hope she took today off!

Graduation day #1 for the basement starts happened today 😊
Got a lot of the starts moved out to the greenhouse and some of them up potted.
Most of what stayed in the basement is flowers and the hot peppers that are slow to start.
