This past Saturday morning LCEMG members took a field trip to Midland to visit Watersong Wild Space and the Permian Basin Master Gardeners Cimarron Community Garden. Thank you to our kind and informative guides at both spaces. We had a wonderful time :).

To learn more about Watersong Wild Space and sign up for their newsletter or inquire about volunteer days, visit:
https://www.watersong.org/
And don't forget to add your nature photos to their project on the iNaturalist app!

To learn more about the Cimarron Community Garden, visit the Permian Basin Master Gardeners FB page linked above!

Tell us in the comments or send us a message -
• Have you ever been to Watersong Wild Space or visited a playa after the rains?
-> Let us know your favorite things about playas, a.k.a. buffalo wallers :)!

• Want to see a similar playa restoration wild space in our county?
-> Let us know your thoughts :)!

• Would you like to get involved in a local community garden project?
-> Request more information :)!

If you time your visit to the Watersong Wild Space with the gentle breezes and overcast skies after summer rains (like we were so lucky to do), expect to be greeted with calm, smiling faces, shady trails, open spaces, and an abundance of vivid new growth.
Our curiosity about this hidden paradise was answered with plentiful blossoms covered in happy pollinators, waterfowl swimming and skimming about the shallows, feisty treetop hawk chases around the shores edge, old tree canopies echoing with birdsong, snakes and lizards hunting along the footpaths, water-shorn soils burmed with deadwood and nearby packrat nests, muddy banks printed and smeared with paw prints and bounties of wild onions at the bridge sides - among the numerous untold, unnoticed natural wonders of an ecosystem being stewarded back to health. A special thank you to The Native Agenda, who generously stocks their native seed library at the Watersong pollinator garden - and whose work was also praised by our PBMG guide at the Cimarron Community Garden for participation in community events and native seed distribution :)!

The Cimarron Community garden is a beautifully curated, skillfully-tended growing and gathering space with a rich history of educational events and garden experimentation. It is the perfect space to be inspired to start your own homestead or community garden. The tidy and welcoming park is nestled within a veritable forested refuge, away from the heat of the city and open prairie. Enjoy your visit to the garden any time of the year and take a break beneath the large pavilion for shade, company and warmth. Sit around the tavern-sized concrete table, swing on a bench beneath the trumpet vines, attend workshops and work days, fire up the on-site grill and enjoy a juicy harvest of grilled garden veggies, flower salads and fresh fruit and herbs for cool drinks and dessert (*harvest with permission, work days and/or membership may be required ^__^!)
Our PBMG guide kindly walked us around the blossoming squares of wildflowers, ornamentals, fruit trees, flowering vines, veggies, herbs and pesky primroses. We sat in the shade together as she told stories about recent years of activity in the garden. It was the perfect place to cool down after our morning walk and warm-up to our neighboring gardening & naturalist community. It was also a great visit to honor our own organizational history. We were inspired by the gorgeous success of the hard work of a small team of volunteers and their community. Thank you PBMG!

You might have seen these blooming around Lea County recently. Have you ever gotten close to smell them? The ones we have found have been practically dripping with nectar and swarming with all kinds of pollinators!

It's interesting for us to learn that they are also important to hummingbirds!

We just saw some of these next to the Rockwind Community Links golf course yesterday in Hobbs!

For such a vibrant looking species there isn't much known about them so far as we could find...

Welcome, little Red Velvet Mite! We've been expecting you!
These cute, fuzzy little arachnids come out each year after a heavy spring rain (like the one we had yesterday). Unlike other mites, these little guys are harmless to humans and pets, and are beneficial in the garden.

Their "true" common name is Giant Red Velvet Mite, which causes us to stop and giggle about the oxymoron. It's kind of like saying "jumbo shrimp."

Thanks to our gardeners and friends who came out to support us this Saturday at the Lovington Food Coalition! Happy Memorial Day weekend to everyone! Congratulations to recent graduates!

We're so thankful to have a notable start to the future Lea County Master Gardeners teaching and food production garden. We had a great turnout Saturday. Thank you so much to everyone who came out!

Volunteers weeded, cleaned litter, marked garden bed and footpath locations, shoveled gravel, drove tractors, transported soil, built beds, transplanted seedlings, watered them in, and enjoyed each other's company while discussing companion planting, seasonal challenges, seedling survival chances.

We laid a little over 250 cubic ft of soil and planted nearly 90 seedlings. Thank you to our volunteer cultivators!
• 7 varieties of pepper plants ~ 40
• 5 different varieties of tomatoes ~ 25
• 2 varieties of squash ~ 5
• Asparagus ~ 11 crowns
• Broccoli ~ 3
• Brussel Sprouts ~ 6

Our next steps are to connect drip lines to in-ground irrigation, move gravel for footpaths, gather and apply mulch to beds, bring in more companion and native plants for food and habitat creation, continue weeding and praying for rain.
