A Rare Bromeliad Worth Discovering: Pitcairnia angustifolia

If you're looking for something truly different, Pitcairnia angustifolia deserves a closer look.

Unlike many bromeliads grown primarily for their foliage, this species puts on an impressive floral display, sending up tall spikes of brilliant red flowers that create a striking contrast against its narrow, arching green leaves. The blooms are highly attractive to hummingbirds and can provide weeks of color when in flower.

Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, Pitcairnia angustifolia thrives in bright filtered light to partial sun and appreciates well-drained soils with regular moisture. Once established, it is surprisingly adaptable and performs beautifully in tropical gardens, shaded borders, and decorative containers.

Despite its ornamental value and ease of culture, this species remains surprisingly uncommon in commercial nursery production, making it a unique addition for collectors, designers, and anyone looking to add something distinctive to the landscape.

Available now in 3-gallon pots.

Summer Heat, Giant Leaves: Colocasia ‘Mojito’ at Its Best

South Florida summer is when tropical plants truly show what they can do, and Colocasia ‘Mojito’ is putting on an incredible display right now.

Available in 3-gallon pots, these plants have developed massive leaves that create an immediate tropical impact in the landscape or container garden. Some leaves are already approaching 18 inches in length, and the plants are just getting started for the season.

The intense summer heat and humidity have also brought out even more dramatic coloration, with every new leaf emerging in a unique blend of green, purple, and deep dark splashes. No two leaves are exactly alike, and the patterns become more striking as the plants continue to grow.

Whether used in mass plantings, decorative containers, tropical borders, or as a marginal aquatic in ponds and water gardens, ‘Mojito’ delivers bold texture and unforgettable color with very little effort.

Ready now in 3-gallon pots and looking better every day.

Tiny Leaves, Huge Impact — Pilea glauca ‘Aquamarine’

Sometimes it's the smallest plants that make the biggest difference. Pilea glauca ‘Aquamarine’, also known as "Tiny Tears," is one of our favorite detail plants for adding texture, softness, and contrast to a design.

Its delicate silver-blue foliage and deep red stems create a beautiful effect whether it's cascading from a container, weaving between stepping stones, softening the edge of a waterfall, or filling shaded garden spaces. The tiny leaves form dense mats that bring a finished, professional look to both landscapes and mixed planters.

It's also an excellent interior plant, thriving in bright, indirect light and looking right at home in hanging baskets, decorative containers, and terrariums.

Designers often focus on the large specimen plants, but it's details like Pilea glauca that tie everything together and elevate an entire project.

Available now in 6" pots.

The Hosta That Actually Thrives in Florida

When most people think of shade gardens, Hostas are often the first plant that comes to mind. Unfortunately, traditional Hostas have never been particularly happy in Florida's heat and humidity.

SunHosta™ changes that.

Developed specifically for southern climates, SunHosta™ doesn't just survive here—it thrives. In fact, the foliage develops even stronger variegation with increased sun exposure. Like traditional Hostas, it appreciates regular moisture while becoming established, but once settled in, it proves surprisingly drought tolerant.

What has surprised many visitors lately, however, isn't the foliage—it's the flowers. Known primarily for its attractive leaves, SunHosta™ produces an abundance of elegant white blooms that rise above the foliage and create an unexpected display. More than one visitor has stopped to ask about the beautiful white flowers near the front of the nursery, only to discover they're coming from a Hosta.

In South Florida, SunHosta™ remains evergreen, slowing down during winter before flushing with fresh growth as temperatures warm. Its compact habit makes it an excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, containers, and pathway edging.

If you've always loved the look of Hostas but assumed they weren't an option for Florida landscapes, it's time to take another look.

We have beautiful plants available now in 1-gallon pots.

And one final note: snails seem to love them almost as much as gardeners do. One landscaper told me he was convinced snails were crossing a parking lot at night just to get to his SunHostas. Fortunately, effective and environmentally friendly controls are readily available.

Friday Feature: Client Voices

One of the greatest compliments we can receive is when a client recognizes both the quality of our plants and the effort we put into offering something different.

A recent review praised not only the condition and quality of our material, but also our selection of exciting and unusual plants. Comments like that are especially meaningful because they reflect two of our core goals: growing exceptional plants and continually searching for new, rare, and distinctive varieties that help our clients create landscapes that stand apart.

Anyone can grow the same plants as everyone else. We prefer to seek out the uncommon, develop new selections through our breeding program, and offer plants that bring something special to the landscape.

Thank you to all of our clients who take the time to share their experiences. Your feedback inspires us to keep pushing forward and growing what others won't.

A Collector's Begonia at Its Absolute Best

Some plants are beautiful for a season. Others seem to reinvent themselves throughout the year. Begonia valida falls firmly into the second category.

Already prized by collectors for its rarity and dramatic foliage, this remarkable Begonia is now putting on an even more impressive display. We are currently seeing the colorful new growth emerging at the same time as clusters of delicate white flowers, creating layers of red, bronze, pink, green, and bloom all on the same plant. The effect is striking and adds yet another dimension to an already exceptional species.

The new foliage emerges in rich shades of red, bronze, and rosy blush before maturing to a deep glossy green, while the upright growth habit and bold textured leaves give it an architectural presence rarely found in Begonias. It thrives in bright shade or filtered light with rich organic soil and consistent moisture, making it an outstanding choice for tropical landscapes, shaded courtyards, and specimen containers.

This is one of those plants that stops people in their tracks and prompts the inevitable question: "What is that?"

We currently have a limited supply available now in 3-gallon pots. For a plant this uncommon, they won't be around for long.

A Shower of Gold for the Landscape

Some plants bloom, and some plants put on a performance. Galphimia gracilis, commonly known as Shower of Gold or Thryallis, falls firmly into the second category.

An old workhorse of the Florida landscape, Thryallis has been used for decades because it is tough, dependable, and flowers almost continuously. Unfortunately, it is sometimes planted without much thought and sheared into submission. When given the proper space and selectively pruned to maintain its natural form, however, it can be absolutely spectacular.

Native to eastern Mexico, this sun-loving shrub produces an astonishing display of bright yellow, star-shaped flowers accented by reddish stems. Better yet, it blooms repeatedly throughout the year, often remaining colorful for weeks at a time. When mature, a plant in full flower is impossible to ignore.

Growing approximately 6' x 4', Shower of Gold is an excellent choice for informal hedges, mixed borders, mass plantings, poolside landscapes, and anywhere a dependable splash of color is needed. Once established, it is quite drought tolerant, making it a valuable addition to Florida landscapes. The flowers are also highly attractive to butterflies, honeybees, and other pollinators.

We currently have beautiful 7-gallon plants available that are literally covered in blooms, making this the perfect time to add this classic Florida favorite to the landscape.

This is one of those plants that reminds us why some classics never go out of style.

The Heliconia Everyone Knows

When people picture a tropical garden, this is often the plant they imagine. Heliconia rostrata, commonly known as Lobster Claw, is the classic heliconia seen in books, movies, resorts, botanical gardens, and countless floral arrangements around the world.

With South Florida's heat and humidity in full force, our plants are responding exactly as they should and are just beginning to bloom. The pendant flower clusters, with their brilliant red bracts edged in yellow and green, hang gracefully beneath the foliage and create one of the most recognizable tropical displays in horticulture.

Native to South America, Heliconia rostrata thrives in rich soil with regular moisture and grows 6–8 feet tall, making it an outstanding backdrop or focal point in tropical landscapes. The flowers are also highly attractive to hummingbirds and hold exceptionally well when used as cut flowers.

There are many beautiful heliconias, but this is the one that defined the genus for much of the gardening world. It's a true tropical classic.

We currently have beautiful 7-gallon plants available and just starting to come into bloom.

Friday Feature: Client Voices

One of the comments we appreciate most is when clients recognize not only our plant selection, but the people behind it.

A recent Google review highlighted both our extensive inventory and the friendliness of our staff. That means a great deal to us because while we work hard to offer an unusually large selection of tropical, flowering, and collector plants, we also believe that great customer service is just as important as great plants.

Whether you're looking for something common, something rare, or simply some guidance on the right plant for a project, our team is always happy to help.

Thank you to all of our clients who take the time to share their experiences. Your feedback helps us continue growing and improving every day.

Nicole's Latest Succulent Creations

Nicole has been busy again.

As our Production Supervisor, Nicole spends her days overseeing plant production throughout the nursery, but she also has a remarkable eye for plant combinations and design. A few weeks ago, we put together a succulent planter as a mock-up for a client project. The combination of colors, textures, and forms turned out so well that we decided it deserved a permanent place in the nursery. Then Nicole took it a step further, adding her own creative touch and sense of style.

The result wasn't one planter, but two. Designed to complement each other beautifully, they feature an incredible mix of succulent varieties, with contrasting forms, colors, and textures that work together while still allowing each planter to have its own personality. They make a striking pair and are a great example of how succulents can be used as living works of art.

Whether you're looking for a small accent piece or a dramatic landscape specimen, we have an outstanding selection of succulents available, ranging from 1-gallon plants all the way up to impressive 65-gallon specimens.

If you're looking for texture, color, and year-round interest with minimal maintenance, it's hard to beat succulents.
