A new follower mentioned one thing she’s excited to grow is cucumbers, and it reminded me of one of my absolute favorite varieties to recommend.
Variety Spotlight: Armenian Cucumber
Despite the name, Armenian cucumbers are actually a type of melon that grows like a cucumber — and they thrive in hot climates like West Texas.
Why I love recommending this one:
Extremely productive vines
Long, ribbed fruits that can grow 12–24 inches
Crisp texture with a mild, never-bitter flavor
Handles heat better than many standard cucumbers
They’re fantastic sliced fresh, in salads, or even for light pickling when harvested smaller.
If you're planning your garden this year and want a cucumber that can handle the Texas heat, Armenian cucumber is definitely one to consider.
Quick fun facts:
• Armenian cucumbers can grow over 2 feet long if you let them!
• They tolerate heat and drought better than most cucumbers
• Harvesting them around 12–15 inches gives the best texture and flavor
What’s your favorite way to eat cucumbers — fresh slices, pickles, or something else?
