πŸ₯΅ He's not rabid.

He's overheating.

An opossum sitting in the shade with its mouth wide open, drooling and barely moving can look alarming. Many people assume disease.

Usually, it's heat.

Unlike many mammals, opossums are poor at regulating body temperature during hot weather. They don't sweat effectively, and their cooling system is far less efficient than most people realize.

🌿 When temperatures climb, they may:

β€’ Pant with their mouth open
β€’ Drool excessively
β€’ Rest in deep shade
β€’ Become less active until evening

A shallow bowl of water placed nearby can help. So can a shaded corner of the yard.

What doesn't help:

❌ Spraying the animal with water
❌ Trying to pick it up
❌ Chasing it away

Most overheated opossums simply need time, shade, and access to water.

If the animal remains in the same place overnight or appears unable to move the next morning, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

The open mouth isn't aggression.

It's an animal trying to stay cool on a hot day. 🌿

I only get about 1–2 years.

That's my entire life.

During those two years I'll spend almost every night searching for food while avoiding cars, predators, dogs, storms, and humans.

Most people see me and think "pest."

But here's what I actually do:

βœ“ Eat cockroaches, beetles, snails, slugs, and other garden pests.

βœ“ Clean up carrion before it rots and attracts disease.

βœ“ Consume fallen fruit and organic waste that would otherwise decay.

βœ“ Help control tick populations that can spread disease.

βœ“ Recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem.

I'm also North America's only native marsupial.

A mother can carry up to a dozen babies on her back at once.

When threatened, I rarely fight.

Instead I bluff, hiss, drool, or "play dead" β€” a survival response so famous we named an expression after it.

Despite my reputation, attacks on people are extremely rare.

Most of us simply want to be left alone.

The sad part?

Many opossums never reach old age.

Cars kill millions of wildlife every year, and because we move mostly at night, roads are one of our biggest dangers.

So the next time you see an opossum crossing a road or wandering through your yard, remember:

You're looking at a harmless animal that spends its short life cleaning up the environment around you.

Not every hero looks cute.

So it has been a very busy week. But I'm still so impressed with my milkweed. And we have baby koi fry. It looks like thousands, I hope not. We don't have that much room for fish. They sure do love us and they know us; that's what's so strange at a very early stage of their life. They know our big fat heads. Lol. We also got our second rent-a-cacti gig for a wedding. I think that's kind of cute. And I'm so happy that it's happening and it was just very natural.

Greenhorn milkweed, courtesy of the birds, I'm sure, and good soil. I wonder if it could have come in with the straw. It's positioned in the best possible place in the butterfly garden.

Enjoy!

🌿✨ The season is off to a beautiful start at Petals and Fins ✨🌿
The weather is just right, and Bryan and I are busy getting all of our koi ponds refreshed and ready. The water is clear, the lilies are waking up, and the marginal plants are stretching toward the sun. Very soon, everything will be blooming and full of life.
There is nothing quite like standing beside your own pond… watching the koi glide peacefully beneath blooming water lilies, surrounded by lush marginals. It turns any backyard into a place you never want to leave.
After Easter, we officially begin the season with: 🐟 Koi Fish
🌸 Water Lilies
🌿 Marginal Pond Plants
🌱 Aquatic Plants for pond lovers and enthusiasts
If you love your pond and want to create something truly mesmerizing, this is your time.
By appointment only. Come see what’s coming to life.
