There is always so much to see at — even if you only have a hour stolen away from driving up the M40 (couldn’t resist the sign to turn off). A plant person paradise. and her team are exceptional gardeners, and through their example — exceptional educators. Definitely the best and most beautiful hazel cages and rose domes I’ve seen in a garden, and I was finally here at the perfect time to take photos of them, as the perennials are just beginning to grow through. And that fabulous yewhenge and meadow!! ❤️❤️A beloved destination next spring.

Hard to leave my garden in May but excited to see other great gardens and gather ideas with , and later, .

Someone needs to invent that Star Trek transporter technology so I can be in two places at once.

New chickens arrived. The dogs are interested. Very interested.

Home home home home home! After four weeks away settling my mom into a new home in a new state with my incredible brother and sisters and their spouses, I’ve made it back in time for candelabra season (emerging Hydrangea quercifolia), the full re-greening of the woods and my favorite daffodil lighting up the garden at dusk — Thalia. And I realize that as much as I adore the whole picture — I get most excited about the individual brushstrokes. Plants are just too exciting at this time of year.

The process of rejuvenating and readying my parents beloved vegetable garden is definitely a labor of love. Love for them (obviously), love for the land that they tended for 47 years, and sending love into the future for the family that will no doubt make a lot of new memories here.

For now I’ve put these beds to bed with black plastic and straw. Boy, oh boy, that soil is rich and beautiful in comparison with the decomposed granite that they started with all those years ago. I realize how blessed I am in Virginia with my stream valley soils — but it’s difficult to compete with the joy of California weather. I will miss this place so much.

Mt. Cuba is out with another excellent, in-depth guide documenting a three- year trial of Solidago (goldenrod). These are incredibly valuable guides that highlight trials for many genera — you can find them online at mtcubacenter.org — I urge you to look to when you are considering adding many of our favorite native plants to your garden.
