Night 2: We arrived at Mammoth Cave National Park after midnight. I guess it was technically after 11pm, bc we gained an hour in Kentucky, but after driving 9 hours it felt more like 3am. I could NOT find the campsite. I could NOT find the visitor center. I was driving down a road and a sign popped up that said “Road ends in water”. WTH? Yup dead ends IN a river. (And I don’t mean AT the river) Kids are asleep so I think we’ll just sleep in the car at this point. I found a different, and almost empty, campground also in the NP, so we pulled in there. Kids woke. Wanted to sleep in tent. So I set it up in the dark and we get in. For the love of god I’ve never had such a scary tent sleeping experience. Pouring sheets of rain for HOURS. Did I mention the tent isn’t even staked down?? The lightning is so bad. I keep picturing our tent being struck by lightning and me winning the worst mother ever award. The kids are sound asleep. Something must be wrong with them!! When enough water got in the tent I woke them all up and made them move to the car. And in case you were ever wondering... a 5’9” woman and two skinny kids CAN sleep in the backseat of a CRV. Teenage sister slept in passenger seat.
