These guys got a haircut on Wednesday and this the growth after 3 days… they are on track to need another one in another week.

Keeping onion seedlings back to about 3” allows them to grow strong roots and bases without being weighed over and getting floppy.

2023 Allium Varieties

-Tadorna Leek
-American Flag leek
-Guardsman onion
-Tokyo long white bunching
-Pompeii Onion
-Red Floyd Onion
-Sierra Blanca Onion
-Texas Early Grano 502

Yes that’s a lot of onions, however a majority I got in a grab bag or were leftover from last year. Allium seeds have a very short shelf life, and their germination rate drops exponentially each year. So I needed to use them up.

So I’m going to be attempting to plant as many as I can randomly around the garden as a pest deterrent.

**New for AAG in 2023**
❄️“Winter Sowing”❄️

I wanted to add a lot more perennial and medicinal herbs and flowers to the garden this year but didn’t want to over burden myself with trying to start them indoors with them taking up space that will otherwise be occupied by my main harvest crops.

*enter winter sowing*

Each of these milk jugs is it’s own little greenhouse, that has a different plant sown in each. Either with hardy perennial flowers or herbs or hardy annual flowers or herbs. That when the time and conditions are right for each one they will sprout just like they would if the plant was let to go to seed in the fall. This is mainly used for plants that need cold stratification but can be used for every plant. Some people even sow peppers and tomato’s this way if they have a long enough growing season. Very hands off.

I already have about half the things sprouting already so it does work, but I’m excited to see the results and implement more in the coming years. If you are interested in more on winter sowing I can point you to some more information on it but as this is my first year implementing it I will just be trying it myself and reporting my results.

Well I’m back. After injuring my back in the spring of last year as well as our family welcoming my son into the world my plan for sharing my 2022 gardening journey on insta took a backseat to my full time work, taking care of myself, my family, and keeping up with the garden. However this year is the year and I want you to hold me accountable. I’m already on my way for the 2023 season and will be sharing what I have already done, varieties I’ll be growing this year, seeds that I’ve already started, success and failures from last year, as well as some fun experiments I’ll be trying this year in the upcoming days. Stick around and follow me for the 2023 growing season, and if you have any questions or comments at all don’t be afraid to reach out!
