Also make sure you leave your faucets dripping!

Forecasts are calling for 14-18 inches of snow in some of our areas over the weekend. In the past we've had customers lose heat during heavy snow events when their furnace vent becomes blocked by snow or ice. Remember, if your furnace suddenly shuts down during a snow storm your first check should be to verify the furnace flue or vent is clear of snow. If not, the furnace is designed to shut itself off. Typically you can fix this issue by clearing snow away from the vent or flue THEN power cycle the furnace by turning off the power to it for several seconds at its switch or at your home's breaker box. When you repower the furnace, if the t-stat is calling for heat, it will attempt to restart and if a blocked flue or vent was the problem it should be able to fire back up. We had hundreds of customers lose heat due to this issue when a late winter storm swept through southern Indiana several years ago dropping more than 2 feet of snow in our service territories. Many assumed their gas supply had failed, but the problems turned out to be blocked vents and flues.
