The Amendment You Add Is Changing Your Soil Completely — Underground 🌱

Buying the right plants and seeds means nothing if the soil beneath them cannot support root growth, drainage, and biological activity. These five amendments address five different soil problems — and choosing the wrong one makes things worse.

Perlite — The small white particles in most quality potting mixes. Volcanic glass that is completely inert and pH-neutral. Prevents compaction, creates the air pockets roots need between waterings, and dramatically improves drainage in dense soil. Add 20% by volume to any container mix.

Compost — The one amendment that improves every soil type. Loosens clay by adding organic matter that prevents clay particles from sticking together. Adds moisture retention to sandy soil. Feeds the fungal networks and bacterial communities that make other nutrients accessible to plant roots. No soil problem gets worse with compost.

Coarse sand — Works well for improving drainage in already-sandy soil. The critical warning: adding sand alone to clay soil creates something very close to concrete. If you are amending clay, always combine sand with compost in equal parts.

Gypsum — Specifically for breaking up clay compaction. The calcium in gypsum causes clay particles to group into larger aggregates, creating drainage channels through the soil without changing the pH. The best first amendment for red clay soils common across the southeastern US.

Coco coir — The sustainable replacement for peat moss. Made from coconut husk fibres, it holds moisture in the root zone while maintaining excellent aeration. pH-neutral and consistent — ideal for containers where watering frequency is a challenge.

Their tiny wings can flap up to 80 times in a single second. For comparison, a human blinking fast can do it maybe 5 times a second. 🤯💚 They remember your yard, and they are pushing their bodies to the absolute limit to get back. Make sure that clear sugar water is waiting for them!

Tree roots can extend two to three times wider than a tree’s canopy.

Roots grow outward in search of moisture and oxygen, often following the easiest path through loose soil or tiny pipe cracks. When they encounter water sources like sewer lines, they can infiltrate and expand, worsening leaks over months or years. Surface roots also thicken over time, exerting enough force to lift concrete slabs and disrupt pavements, especially within 10–30 feet of structures.

A common observation is that homeowners plant trees based on appearance without considering mature root spread. This often leads to cracked driveways, clogged pipes, or costly foundation concerns later.

Plan planting distances carefully before digging. Keep large, aggressive species at least 50 feet from underground pipes, and allow around 30 feet from driveways or patios to reduce lifting risk. For homes, maintain a minimum of 20 feet from foundations and favor trees with deeper, less invasive root systems. If space is limited, choose smaller ornamental species and install root barriers early to guide growth away from structures.
