We’re starting up a podcast focusing on native plants, conservation, and sustainability with a focus on Dane County and Wisconsin. We have met so many people doing incredible work to support environmental causes in their homes, neighborhoods, community organizations, and businesses and wanted to share these stories so we all can feel more connected locally in our efforts for a better, more sustainable world. Native Field Thistle (Cirsium discolor) in bloom in our prairie on Madison's south side. So far it has been very popular with bumblebees, but I also recently learned it is a favorite among goldfinches which may explain the increase I've seen in our yard lately. I was initially concerned that the thistle in our prairie was the invasive bull thistle (there is a little of that too unfortunately, which we will remove), but I was thankful to discover that Cirsium discolor was included in our seed mix and nearly every plant I inspected had the smoking gun white under-leaf color that indicates native thistle (also confirmed by my plant ID app). They look a little silly in our prairie right now because some are towering at 12' tall over the rest of the prairie, but there is a lot of bird, bee, and butterfly activity in the prairie right now and I think the thistle is drumming up a lot of that excitement. 🎉

This bumblebee is ‘buzz pollinating’ a Wild Senna plant in our yard in Madison, WI. Some plants, like Wild Senna, require a bee to rapidly vibrate on the anther of a plant to release pollen in a small burst. The bee causes this vibration with rapid movement of indirect flight muscles. You can hear the high pitched sound of the vibrations if you turn your audio up. 🐝

Native plant themed, hand-crafted pottery exploration underway! Abby from Abby Seltzer Ceramics recently visited our prairie and native plant gardens on Madison’s south side and we clipped some Purple Coneflower, Butterflyweed, Wild Bergamot, Daisy Fleabane, Purple Prairie Clover, and more to explore how clay would handle these botanical impressions and molds. I especially love her hand-crafted glazed mushroom mugs, and while sipping my morning coffee with one of her creations, I thought how cool would it be to have a native plant themed mug to start the day. I’m so excited to see what she comes up with! If you’d be interested in a one of a kind native plant mug, make sure to follow for updates!

Yellow Coneflower (Ratibida pinnata) in bloom in our prairie in Madison, WI. I thought these would get swallowed by the sea of Black Eyed Susans but they really pop and hold their own. If you have any I’d love to see how you incorporate them into your gardens. ♥️ Drop a photo below!
