Flower World was cultivated as a wholesale nursery in the late 60’s growing from a four-acre parcel of land in Maltby to what it is today. Immigrating from The Netherlands in early 1965, John and Marijke Postema were new to the Pacific Northwest and wanted to set roots in Washington State. John received his training in Aalsmeer, Holland where he learned the trade from growers in the plant and cut
flower industry. Flower World started in 1968 on a four-acre parcel of land in rural Snohomish County. During the 1970's and 80's Flower World expanded into the international market with operating growing facilities in South America as well as in The Netherlands. Importing and selling bedding plants, fuchsias and foliage were the main crops that were produced and sold to the local wholesale markets and shipped nationwide to the wholesale trade. In the early 1980's local shoppers stopped in at the greenhouses to inquire about plants for their gardens, this was the beginning of the retail nursery. Until 1994 the nursery was located on one of the original eight-acre parcels of land in Maltby. In the spring of 1994, Flower World’s retail garden center was relocated to the site that it occupies currently, which originally was a dairy farm owned by a local family in Maltby. Today, Flower World continues to grow 90% of its own plants on approximately 200 acres in the Maltby and Snohomish Valley. Flower World, a world of flowers, plants and a whole lot more.
