Erosion Control + MSD's Project Clear
Here's a scenario we hear from customers and perhaps you can relate.
Homeowner: I have a sizable space on a hill (or slope), and I want to plant a groundcover to help the soil from eroding. Oh, and I have deer.
Sound familiar?
First, we want to commend you for choosing plants for your space! The root systems of plants are a far superior solution at stabilizing the soil vs putting rock or mulch down or leaving turf grass in place. And if you're going to choose plants, make it dynamic! Use shrubs and perennials. Let the space tell a really cool story by offering different textures, bloom time, flower shape, and color! What's even better is the idea of creating a little ecosystem on your property where caterpillars, butterflies/moths, birds, bees, and other unsung heroes can thrive!
Grow Native! has a Hillside Garden Plan (https://grownative.org/hillside-garden-plan/) created for your inspiration. Different plants can be selected based on the lighting, drainage, and soil type of your property. Our native experts in our Natives Dept. can talk you through plant pairings to solve your erosion woes.
Also, MSD has grant money available through Project Clear. Homeowners in a certain program area are encouraged to manage the stormwater on their property. This includes the removal of turf grass and planting native plants. Click here (https://stlmsd.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=1dc144bdb9b2484b82cfe73cc8a3c8d1) to see if you fall in the covered area.
