This building has been standing since the 1870s. When we took on the Williamsburg Schoolhouse, it had spent decades as an artist’s loft, utilitarian, bare, stripped of any domestic character. Our job was to give it back its soul. Every decision was made to honor the age of the building like reclaimed North American chestnut floors, 1700s Delft ceramic tile, antique earthenware sinks, salvaged doors with their original hardware still intact. When you walk in today, it feels like it has always been a home. That was always the goal.

I bought this apartment as an illustrator with no plans to become a designer. The renovation had other ideas. What followed was a crash course in architecture, sourcing, and craft — and the foundation of everything we’ve built since.

The second floor library and sitting room is where this Boerum Hill townhouse gets quiet. Custom built-ins by White Arrow, a Lisa Johansson-Pape leather floor lamp, a reissued coffee table, a sofa surrounded almost entirely by vintage. It opens onto a deck and somehow feels both removed from the house and central to it. The room you disappear into.

The primary bedroom of our Williamsburg duplex — and yes, we committed fully to pink. A hand-painted watercolor mural runs wall to wall, shifting from blush to deep rose depending on the light. Warm oak, bouclé, brass, custom millwork. The whole floor was designed to be a retreat from the energy of a house with three kids below. Calm, warm, a little romantic. Exactly what it needed to be.

When your client performs eight shows a week on Broadway, the apartment needs to be the exhale. Soft, considered, feminine without being fussy. We restructured the floor plan entirely, adding archways throughout to lift the ceilings and define each room. Pale blue runs from the living room sofa to the art above it. The bedroom is quiet — boucle, warm wood, a Dafy Hagai print above the bed. The one sharp note is the kitchen: black cabinetry, white marble, brass. Every great performance needs a little tension.

A circa 1824 Federal townhouse in Brooklyn Heights, previously owned by the family of landscape designer Alice Ireys. Given that horticultural history, bold botanical pattern felt necessary. The front parlor has a curved emerald sofa and a record player on the sideboard — a room that’s set up for entertaining but comfortable enough to lounge in. British-influenced silhouettes, contemporary designers, and vintage pieces sit comfortably together across every floor. The geometric stair runner and large-scale paintings signal what the rest of the house is doing: traditional in its bones, layered and playful in everything else.

Install day, New Paltz. This is the part where months of decisions start becoming a room. We’re not ready to show you everything yet — but we will be soon.

Jewel tones throughout, but never overwhelming. Amethyst, emerald, and navy grounded by ebonized oak and walnut so the color always has somewhere to land. What ties it all together, room to room, is the art. Works by and move through the spaces, not as decoration but as part of the color story itself. The hand-painted navy bookcase in the entryway sets the tone before you’ve even stepped fully inside. Everything that follows is a continuation of that first note.

A closet is one of the few spaces in your home that exists entirely for you. No guests, no audience, just the room you start every single morning in. That’s exactly why it deserves the same intention as anything else we design. Custom built-ins, library ladders, the right hardware, proper light. Most people don’t realize how much a well-designed closet quietly changes the texture of a day until they have one.

There’s a version of a playroom that takes over a house and a version that belongs to it. The difference is usually color. The instinct is always to go bright and saturated, or sad and beige, and we pushed the palette somewhere more interesting. Jewel tones and muted hues that are vibrant and joyful without overwhelming. William Morris wallpaper, mushroom stools, French rush chairs. A kid’s room that earns its place in the whole.
