Snow Damage Repair - A Unique Challenge 🏚️❄️

During the week of January 5th, our area experienced 20 inches of heavy snowfall, causing significant damage to many structures. One of the more unusual cases we came across was a situation where the Stihl trusses on a roof system had imploded under the weight of the snow.

What makes this project even more unique is that if the structure were to be torn down, the client would lose valuable property due to its proximity to the railroad. To prevent this, our team at Exterior Repair Medics took on the challenge of repairing the structure in place.

We reframed the walls, reinforced the structure, and swung in new wood roof trusses that will be sure to handle the future loads to come. This is a perfect example of how we approach every job with the dedication and creativity it takes to ensure our customers get the best solution.

Today, we inspected yet another roof with poor installation techniques that caused damage in multiple areas inside the home. Can you spot the issue?

When installing shingles, it's crucial to slide them underneath the headwall flashing. In this case, the shingles were installed over the flashing, with the top edge sealed using roofing asphalt. While this may hold up for a short time, the sealant will degrade over time, creating small gaps that allow moisture to seep in and cause significant damage to your home.

Side note* you can go the extra mile and install the shingles under the flashing, and then install an additional layer of shingles over the flashing for aesthetic purposes. That was not the case here.

Attention Homeowners: Roof Installation Tip for Better Protection! 🏠

I recently had the opportunity to inspect a roof where a common roofing mistake had led to significant water damage inside the home. The underlayment was installed underneath the drip edge rather than over it—an installation error that can cause water to seep behind the wall, potentially leading to costly interior damage, like drywall issues.

This can also create issues with ice damming in colder months, as improperly installed underlayment can prevent water from properly draining off the roof. This could result in water backing up under the shingles, leading to leaks and interior damage.

In this case, the homeowner was fortunate enough to be within their 5-year warranty, which should cover the repair. However, this experience serves as a reminder of the importance of proper roofing installation. It is extremely important to get an unbiased second opinion if you feel uneasy.

For your roof to be properly protected from wind-driven rain and ice damming, the underlayment should always be installed under the drip edge, not the other way around. This ensures that water flows correctly into the gutters and doesn’t get trapped between layers, which could lead to leaks, water damage, and even ice damming.

Another day, another roof installation that falls short of quality. This particular home had its roof installed four years ago by a company that many consider to be the top in town. Unfortunately, the reality of their work tells a different story. During the inspection, I noticed that the drip edge was installed incorrectly—laid directly on top of the underlayment instead of the underlayment being placed over the drip edge. This improper installation allowed water to get behind the wall, ultimately leading to interior damage.

I won’t name names, but I’m deeply disappointed to see this from a company that actively seeks out 5-star reviews. If you're going to claim excellence, it’s important to actually deliver on that promise. It's vital to ensure the job is done right, especially when it’s a service as important as a roof over someone's head.

To make matters worse, another company came out to provide an inspection, but instead of addressing the issue, they simply offered a new quote for a full replacement.

As a company that prides itself on honesty, transparency, and a high standard of excellence, it's disheartening to see what some of the so-called “successful” companies are willing to let slip by. Quality should always come first.
