Dahlia propagation: there are videos and how tos from all the top dahlia growers. Each providing their practices from taking one tuber and producing multiple new plants that will grow and with🤞will in return receive tubers from each cutting.

Being relatively new to the dahlia world I have been playing with different techniques and growing mediums to find what works best for me. One thing I have noticed … direct tuber cuttings seem to produce roots faster.

I took 2 cuttings from the same tuber. The first cutting I placed the bottom leaf and node into the soil and the top growth shoot with a node. The second I split the bottom leaf and node down the center and placed each in the soil. Then the next node and finally the top growth shoot and node. So 6 cuttings in all in the same Neversink tray with the same soil mix. 2 weeks later I checked. The cuttings that had directly been attached the tuber had rooted but the plant cuttings still yet to form roots.

So, the question is … which cutting will form tubers better? Any guesses??

What is your favorite method?

It’s seed starting time…

While the world still feels quiet and brown, your local growers are already planning, scheduling, and sowing seeds. Trays are being filled. Varieties are carefully chosen.

Little tiny seeds — smaller than a grain of rice — tucked into soil with big plans.

Seed starting season is equal parts science and faith. You measure soil temperature, track germination rates, adjust lighting… and then you wait. And trust that something beautiful is happening underground.

So if you’re dreaming of flowers this summer, just know — they’re already being started. 🌱

Did you know the color green sits in the middle of the color spectrum and studies have shown green can lower heart rate and cortisol levels, which helps people feel more balanced and less anxious? Psychologically, green is linked to growth, healing, and restoration—think spring energy rather than high-alert energy.

Last year I found myself drifting toward green fillers than flowers. Don’t get me wrong, I love blooms but maybe a small shift will happen among the rows this year.

What’s your favorite greenery/filler?

I find the winter months is when the excitement of the season starts to build. I tell myself that I won’t go overboard on seeds and dahlia tubers. That I’ll stick to the plan that I have spent hours making for succession planting and varieties … yet here I am. Ignoring all the lessons I learned about “too much” last year. January me is just out here pretending “don’t worry, you got this!”

Anyone else shopping like they’ve got limitless garden space and time or is it just me?

Oh it’s a thing. This wild ride of searching for your most wanted dahlia. You set alarms for grower sales you trust, you open web browser tabs, have you payment ready to go and then in seconds (and I means seconds) your dreams of the dahlia blooms are fulfilled or dashed.

Some find it frustrating, some find it a thrill and other just prefer to stay out of the fray and wait. Whatever your choice, I am sure there is a wish list out there 🤪😉

One of my favorite dahlias is the KA Cinder Rose. It took some time to acquire a tuber not a cutting but every time she blooms I smile and the stress of the dahlia wars fades from my memory.

Dahlias … one moment they are like “surprise, are you shocked I just grew from an old shriveled dying tuber” and the next minute “Actually … no, I’m done. Better luck next time.”

I had one Chateau de la Bordelaise cutting and it was growing, flowering and just putting off amazing dahlia love. Then I go to dig it up, nope … you get 2 mini tubers. So I pot it up to let it grow more, take a few cuttings and now here I sit wondering where it all went wrong. My favorite dahlia gone but all the other cuttings are sitting happily under the lights. Seriously…. 😒

I swear I blink and suddenly the flowers are gone, the reels are late, and I’m scrolling wondering how everyone else remembers to document their lives. 😅

But hey — here are the last of the mums. Fluffy, cozy, and totally worth the chaotic scramble to capture them. Thanks for sticking around even when my posting schedule is… let’s call it seasonally inspired.

Pink petals like spun sugar and soft morning light — KA Mocha Jo is the kind of dahlia that feels like it wandered straight out of a storybook garden.

She’s the bloom you’d imagine tucked in an old teacup on a windowsill, or gathered into a hand-tied bouquet for a friend who loves simple, quiet beauty. Dahlias have a way of making even the smallest corner feel like a secret cottage garden.

Rhubarb & Custard collerette dahlia has been one of my favorites in the garden this year. Those mauvey-pinks 😍

What makes collerette dahlias so special?
•They have a single row of petals with a contrasting “collar” of smaller petals.
•Their open centers make them pollinator magnets — bees and butterflies love them!
•Perfect for cut flower gardens, they add both charm and biodiversity.

Do you grow collerettes, or are you team dinner-plate? To be honest I am a team waterlilly dahlias. Actually I take that back, poms are my favorite 🤪 Drop your favorite below ⬇️
