Let’s all say that we are “green” with envy at this gorgeous kitchen! We took 4 small spaces and relocated a staircase to create this open concept kitchen, dining and casual sitting area. Who wouldn’t want to cook and entertain in this kitchen? It has all the bells and whistles with a pot filler, built-in microwave drawer, 7 burner professional range, and appliance garage.

But getting there was not easy. After taking down all the walls and making sure we had the structural support, we began designing. Not wanting a countertop seam in the island, we dropped a section down a few inches which works perfectly as a baking area. We needed one column in the island for structural reasons, so to provide balance, we added a second column on the other end. But the range is the show stopper in this kitchen with the striking hickory wood exhaust hood.

We packed a lot of punch in this small kitchen. It started with relocating and widening the opening between the living room and kitchen. We stole a little bit of space from the living room which gave us room for two full height pantries and a coffee bar. Then we swapped the stove and dishwasher and moved the sink to the corner so there was more counter space for preparation. Finally, we added a new wider island with even more storage.

No before pictures on this project. Walls were already framed in this home before we got the call to design the kitchen and bathrooms. We had so much space to work with and the cathedral ceilings made the space look even larger. The dining room had the perfect spot for a dry bar with two tall pantry cabinets. So much storage in this home!

Some of our favorite kitchen designs involve taking underutilized spaces and creating a dream kitchen for our client. This almost always involves taking down walls to create an open concept. These before and after photos might be hard to understand, but we included floor plans at the end to help.

Starting with the before photos of the original layout of the kitchen. Almost this entire space became a hidden walk-in pantry and mudroom. Our client’s BIGGEST issue was the refrigerator right beside the entry door. Who does that? Then we swing around and start taking down walls. On the other side of the kitchen wall, we demolished a full bathroom (don’t worry, they had another full bath on this floor), and took over a small eating area on the far end to create this beautiful kitchen with 2 islands. The next set of photos show the same spaces from the opposite side. The remaining photos take you on a tour of the kitchen with the refrigerator recessed into an old pantry closet and a small coffee bar around the corner in what was an old coat closet.

How do you take the 1980’s out of this Mansfield center-entrance Colonial? Well, you start by taking down walls!

Our clients wanted to incorporate a closed off and underutilized formal dining room into their kitchen and create better entertaining areas. Their wish list included adding an island and a dry bar, upgrading to professional appliances and increasing the size of the window overlooking their backyard pool and gardens. They did not want total open concept to their family room, but wanted better flow. By relocating one poorly placed single-entry doorway in the kitchen and creating a large opening from the dining room to the family room, we achieved this goal.

Next came the placement of the appliances and cabinetry to create an ergonomic, functional space. Working with our clients (one does the cooking and the other cleanup), we designed a space that works for the chef’s cooking style and where both are able to work cohesively.

The frosting on the cake is the dry bar which works for entertaining in the summer with its close proximity to the back deck and is perfect for holiday or general entertaining because it is away from the cooking/cleaning areas and has its own undercabinet refrigerators.
