Trimming Ziza (Golden Alexander) plants in the nursery today. How many caterpillars did we find?? A lot more than we expected this time of year!

We need to trim plants in the nursery so we cover them and protect their roots for the winter since they are in containers above ground. But if this plant is in the landscape, leave it be! There may still be caterpillars feeding on it that will turn into Swallowtail butterflies!

We were proud to sponsor the Bordentown Hometown Hero Foundation’s Challenge Run this past weekend which raised $5,000 to support local veterans suffering from PTS!

Our great friends, had a table set up to spread the word on planting native plants and attracting pollinators and other beneficial insects!

It was a great weekend of doing good and helping our local community on multiple levels.

This Monarch chrysalis was just laying in the driveway last Friday. It must have been on the tractor or a wagon and when we moved the vehicle, the chrysalis fell off.

So we decided to hang it in the office and see if a butterfly emerges. I’ll be honest, I didn’t have a lot of hope this time.

But when we came in yesterday, the Monarch butterfly had emerged and was on the floor mat below the place where the chrysalis hung!!

We let it be and when it started to make its way to the door, we helped it along by letting it crawl onto our finger and then bringing it to the plants outside the office.

Welcome to the world little pollinator. Have a safe journey!!

And then a Monarch emerged!!

On Wed we attended the NJNLA Summer Plant Symposium. I learned from Mt. Cuba Center that the denticulate longhorn bee specializes in pollinating Ironweed (Vernonia). They are easy to spot because they are black and white, the female will have white pollen sacks, and the male has long antennae (looks like horns). So I decided to check out the Ironweed we have planted in our display garden.

I FOUND THEM!! There’s a pic of the female, one of of the male, and the third is a pic with both the male and female. I was astonished!!! This goes to show you, if you plant it and you don’t spray pesticides, they will come and do what they’re supposed to do!!

And as I stood there looking at the bees, I found a Monarch chrysalis (about 5’ from the Milkweed in the same bed). How cool is nature?!?!

I hope this encourages you to plant 1 thing in your outdoor space and then sit back and observe what happens next. It’ll be cool. Just try it!
