The kids are finally out of school.

The rides don’t stop, but the daily cycle of lunches, homework, sports, and keeping everyone on schedule finally lets up a bit.

Once summer arrives, I start noticing all the little projects I’ve been putting off.

Summer project #1: this staircase. A tight winding stack with plastered walls. I dream of wallpaper but know it will get ripped if I ever move any furniture up the stairs.

New coat of paint, runner…. Maybe I paint a mural on the walls?

I pulled out my spring window boxes earlier than usual this year. The early heat did them in, and I’ve been staring at empty boxes ever since.

After spending a few days in Edgartown, I couldn’t stop noticing the window boxes. Geraniums, simple color palettes, flowers spilling over white fences and into the street. They’re part of what makes the town feel so beautiful and welcoming.

So naturally I assumed I’d replant mine.

But now I’m wondering if I should mix in herbs too.

Basil, dill, parsley, thyme—things I’d actually use all summer, alongside the flowers.

Maybe the best window boxes aren’t purely decorative or purely practical. Maybe they’re both.

Beautiful enough for the street. Useful enough for dinner.

A few of my favorites I saw today on sale in anticipation of the tent sale tomorrow at Landry & Acari in Salem, MA.

I couldn’t stop thinking about this house in Edgartown.

A picket fence creates a garden room. A rose-covered arbor marks the entrance. The porch becomes an outdoor living room. An outdoor shower is tucked discreetly along the side.

None of these elements are particularly large. Together, they create layers that make the space feel richer, more private, and more inviting.

It’s a good reminder that great outdoor spaces aren’t always about square footage. So cute!
