Finally made it out to the dahlias today! Been very busy with work and it felt nice just to be in the flowers (not so much the jungle of weeds) and see the blooms beginning to come 💚🥰

‘Lathyrus belinensis’ AKA Belin Pea

This lovely sweet pea relative was discovered in the mountainous region of southern turkey in 1987. Through the efforts of Dr. Keith Hammett and others, many of the Lathyrus x hammettii cultivars exist today! Still trying for that elusive, yellow sweet pea! These are just a few cultivars I am growing out are and using in my own breeding program…
‘Blue Shift’
‘Blue Vein’
‘Turquoise Lagoon’
‘Shell pink’
‘ Primrose’

‘Tagg’s Flamingo’

This is another absolutely stunning variety breed by Dr. Keith Hammett. Neon pink blooming throated in white. Absolutely glows! Lovey scent too! This is the result of a cross between the ‘Pink Nines’ and ‘Future Shock’ cultivars, containing genes from Lathyrus belinensis.

I have ordered some sweet pea seeds from Dr. Keith Hammett, if you don’t know who he is, but you love flowers, you likely have enjoyed something he has hybridized or his decades of innovative and influential flower breeding has had something to do with its creation…

In my packet of ‘Shell Pink’ I had found what I thought was rough seed and emailed him in hopes to identify it. Getting his seeds into the USA is next to impossible now and I was hoping maybe I was lucky and had an extra variety slip in by mistake.

Dr Hammett’s response was as follows…

“‘Shell Pink’ is a Lathyrus x hammettii hybrid. That is a cross between L. odoratus and L. belinensis.

It continues to throw the red variant at low levels, so is not jumped seed.”

So I don’t have a rouge seed but a potential new variant and if I can stabilize it, I’ll have a new ‘hammettii hybrid’ I’ll be able to bring to market someday… 🤞

It starts out a bright scarlet and then starts to color shift and pop its purple veins as it ages.

Last videos and two pics help show age and color progression.

First dahlia bloom of the year goes to Sandia Bliss! 🤣🤣🤣😬 first bloom of the year is always a little wonky. This one might be especially so since it’s screaming to get out of this 4 inch pot 😱 I really need to get these planted! 🤣
