The Corn Farmers just planted the second crop of Mirai corn this week, a little over two weeks after the first crop that is popping out of the ground in the forefront of the photo. It is appreciating the sun and heat this week.

With some fresh ‘Golden Chanterelles" gifted from the Thomas family, fresh corn from the Community Garden, and a fine steak from the Butcher on Whitlock, this has been a good-eating weekend. Thank you Cherokee Heights and the City of Marietta!

This sunflower planted itself in the early spring. Since it picked a convenient corner spot, we planted our usual spring veggies around it and let it be. To show its appreciation, it has zoomed to amazing heights and added lots of entertainment value our visits. We'll see how it does in tomorrow's tropical storm adventure.

This is Francis Mullan, an entomologist from KSU, recording data at our garden today as part of a 4-year USDA urban pollinator research study to measure how urban warming affects bee health in cities across the US. NMNCG is the only study site in Cobb County. There seven other sites in Metro Atlanta. Besides KSU, Bowling Green University and NC State are the other two research universities in the study.

When the North Marietta Neighborhood Community Garden put this Little Free Library in place, it was the very first one in the city limits of Marietta. It has had lots of use over the years and needed a little spiffing up this spring. After the woodwork was done, the Ricciardi and Burklow families volunteered to decorate the sides of the box and this is the latest product of our fun neighborhood. Our neighbors at the Head Start School are going to be pleased, I think.

Spent 2 hours getting the seeds out of the neighborhood pumpkins so that we could shred the rest and feed the compost pile. Might have had 20+ collected on Freyer, Seminole and Allgood.

One of two buckets of worm p**p and associated worm goodies harvested yesterday, four months of production by the team. I worked it into the community garden soil and expect that the worm offspring that came along in the bucket will take off on their own. while the adult worms are enjoying their new peat moss and compost bedding.

Time to separate the worms from the worm farm soil, put the worms back in some new peat moss for the winter, and move the rich old soil to the community garden to nourish the next crops. Some of those little white worm eggs are bound to end up as community garden worms, too.

This is a piece of our current crop of Mirai corn, a Japanese hybrid, seeds the gift of Dr. Bob, a Cobb Master Gardener Intern who volunteers at NMNCG and lives nearby. It is reputed to be the sweetest corn in the world and Dr. Bob made me and my "corn farmer" partner, Steve, promise to eat the first ear raw so that we could experience the sugars immediately after picking and before they started turning to starch. It was a startlingly wonderful experience, but roasting it with butter, salt and pepper is hard to beat, too.
