Fact: your summer containers could look better! Swipe to check our 3 video tips to do now

No. 1 - cut back spent blooms and leggy stalks right back to where you see a new set of leaves forming. Shown here is Angelonia but this applies to almost all summer flowering annuals.
If you are only seeing blooms and leaves at the tip of a stalk go ahead and cut it back by at least 1/3, again preferably where you see a new leaf set coming out

No. 2 - cut back any seed heads that are forming. Lantana, solid green itchy leaf plant, will produce seed heads after flowering. The plant is putting energy into the seeds not new flowers

No 3 - trim any trailers that are stringy OR are taking over the edge of your container

Plant containers dry out QUICK in summer. Water at soil level (never water the tops of the plants) till you see water come out the bottom of the pot.

Soil is real estate. The bigger the container the more insulated the roots are from both heat and freeze. We stay away from planting in pots less than 12” wide for that reason.

Yes - some container plants are thirstier than others. Group like plants together - herbs are a good example of this. We love using thyme as an accent plant because it is so drought tolerant.

Cut back seed heads on plants that have finished flowering - especially lantana! If flowering plants are more leggy than they are blooms don’t be afraid to prune back to a new set of leaves to to encourage a new flush of summer flowers

Get in those plants and pull out dead or moldy leaves and stems (especially moldy with all the rain). Always trim ir pinch off spent blooms

Fertilize in summer!!! All that rain depletes the nutrients and fertilizer used for initial planting. Use a water soluble fertilizer and feed as part of your watering at least every 2 weeks
