September is here, and we’re officially in our favorite planting season, the Brr Months.

Any month that ends in “-ber” is a good month to be planting here in Zone 7, and honestly, we’ll take fall planting over spring most years. The soil is still warm, the air is cooler, and newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials have months to settle in and build roots without the stress of summer heat.

It’s also a great time to plant natives. If you’ve been thinking about adding a pollinator garden, expanding your native plantings, planting a new tree or shrub, or filling in those perennial beds, fall gives plants a great head start before winter.

And with fewer pest problems and gentler growing conditions, fall gardening can be a whole lot more enjoyable, too.

We’ve got lots of native plants, perennials, trees, shrubs, and fall planting favorites ready to go at the nursery, with more arriving throughout the season.

We all know monarch larvae need milkweed, but adult monarchs need so much more as they make their long journey south.

Planting a diversity of native plants gives migrating monarchs a resilient buffet of late-blooming flowers to fuel the way, from meadows and wetlands to forests and dry ridges.

Read our latest blog, ""Monarchs Need More Than Milkweed,"" to learn which native plants can help support monarchs throughout their fall migration and how to choose plants for the conditions you have.

Neem is a tropical tree with a long list of uses, and it’s surprisingly fun to grow as a container plant here in Zone 7.

Traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine and natural farming systems, neem has been valued for its leaves, bark, seeds, and oil. Neem preparations are used in traditional skin and herbal remedies, while neem oil is also widely used in natural pest management.

Although Neem can reach 40–60 feet in tropical climates, they adapt well to container growing and can be kept as small as 4-6 feet with a little pruning.

Pot it up as it grows, starting with a 15 gal pot, put the container on a plant caddy, and roll it onto the porch or patio for the summer to a spot that gets 6-8 hours of direct sunlight a day.

When temperatures drop, bring it indoors to overwinter in a bright, sunny location. Keeping the roots contained and harvesting regularly will help keep the plant smaller and manageable, even as small as 3-8', if pruned regularly.

Give it plenty of sun, warmth, and well-drained soil, and you can keep a little tropical tree growing right alongside your other houseplants.

For gardeners interested in herbalism, natural pest management, or simply growing something unusual, neem is a fascinating addition to the collection.

Neem is available now at The Farm Connection, in store and online for shipping or local pickup.

Planting perennials just got a whole lot easier.

The DeWit Perennial Planter is made for the jobs where you don't need a giant shovel. Its narrow, sturdy blade cuts cleanly into the soil to make a precise planting hole for perennials, bulbs, and small container-grown plants without disturbing more soil than necessary.

It's especially handy when you're filling in an established perennial bed, planting bulbs between existing plants, or adding one more plant to a space that's already pretty full.

Hand-forged from steel with a comfortable wooden handle, it's the kind of garden tool we like to keep around for years rather than replace every few seasons.

If you're planting a lot of perennials this fall, this is the tool I'd have beside me.

Available now at The Farm Connection and online for local pickup.

Black Turmeric (Curcuma caesia)
Also known as Kali Haldi, Black Zedoary

Black Turmeric is a rare and striking member of the turmeric family, best known for its dark blue-black rhizomes and distinctive camphor-like aroma. Traditionally used in Ayurvedic, Unani, and folk medicine, Curcuma caesia has a long history of use in herbal preparations for inflammation, respiratory complaints, joint and muscle discomfort, and skin care.

It’s also a beautiful plant to grow, with broad tropical foliage and an unusual rhizome that makes it especially interesting in a medicinal or herb garden.

Black Turmeric prefers rich, well-drained soil, even moisture, and dappled sun or part shade. Like other turmeric, it grows through the warm season and goes dormant once temperatures cool.

One of my favorite ways to grow it is in fabric grow bags. When harvest time comes, you can simply dump out the bag and sift through the soil for your rhizomes instead of digging around and chasing pieces through the garden.

And fabric bags make overwintering easy. In colder climates like ours, let the plants go dormant and move the bags into an unheated greenhouse, garage, or even a spare room where they can stay protected from freezing temperatures, watering only when soils feel very dry.

With a little patience, overwintered rhizomes can give you larger plants, prettier flowers, and a bigger harvest the following growing season.

If you’re growing a medicinal garden, looking for unusual plants to experiment with, or simply love growing something you don’t see in every garden center, Black Turmeric is a good one to add to the collection.

Black Turmeric is available now at The Farm Connection, both in store and online for shipping or local pickup.
