“Knowing that you love the Earth changes you, activates you to defend and protect and celebrate. But when you feel that the Earth loves you in return, that feeling transforms the relationship from a one-way street into a sacred bond.”

🌱Why Meadows?🌱 Join Wildbud Natives at the N. Asheville Library on April 11 to learn more about why meadows are functional and resilient additions to the greater community. We will also take a field trip to the neighboring meadow at Beaver Lake to see one of our largest meadows in action.

The class is free to the public, but please make sure to RSVP to our host Amy at [email protected].

🌿Two valuable concepts that help Wildbud Natives create truly functional meadows and landscapes are Following and Recruitment.

While clearing brush and invasives on a large property to prepare for a meadow build, these concepts were at work. We observed naturally growing Trilliums, Mountain Mint, at least one species of Monarda, various types of Bluestem grasses, and even a beautiful shady grove of Mayapples. Finding these beloved plants growing among the invasives help us to illustrate just what these concepts mean.

🌱Following: A central tenet that reminds us to slow down and observe what is already happening on the land. What native plants are showing up and what do they tell us? Who wants to be there? We can often “follow” their lead as we build in plants that we know partner well in these spaces and plant communities.

🌱Recruitment: Once we take the time to observe what wants to be there, we “recruit” these plants into the future landscape; they don’t need to be removed or replaced.

As plant identification skills grow, these are easy and honestly exciting ways to engage in and learn from the land. 🌼

🌿It’s true - we’re inspired every day by the curiosity and passion people are discovering for native plants, building functional landscapes, and reconnecting to the web of life we exist in. 🌿

This growing movement is something we’re deeply honored to be a part of — and we want more people to feel welcomed into. Caring for the land should be more accessible, community-driven, and approachable.

✨ Introducing: Meadow Coaching ✨

It has been an exciting live staking season! We love being able to be a small part in the incredible community projects going on around the region like this one. NCWF shared these great photos from their recent creekbank repair job and said:
“NCWF High Country Wild in partnership with MountainTrue planted 5,500 livestakes at Valle Crucis Community Park along the Watauga River and Dutch Creek with 2,600 of the plants made possible through the National Wildlife Federation’s Trees for Wildlife Program and sourced from Wildbud Native Nursery. We planted a variety of species including silky willow, black willow, silky dogwood, and elderberry. Valle Crucis Community Park contains riparian forest, wetland, and meadow habitat which supports a mosaic of wildlife. The park is a staple in the community and a popular gathering place for locals to play music, share a picnic, flyfish, bird watch, and enjoy the solitude that only nature can provide. The park took a big hit during Hurricane Helene with trees uprooted and riverbanks left bare of vegetation. Planting these native trees is an effort to increase biodiversity, enhance wildlife habitat, reduce erosion, and ensure that generations to come can enjoy the natural beauty of Valle Crucis Community Park”

Live Stake season isn’t over and we still have stakes available!

Meadow Pace is a guiding principle in the Wildbud ethos. It reflects our belief that healthy landscapes emerge when we work with the land’s timing instead of against it. It means finding patience, beauty, and value in nature’s own cadence, rather than forcing plants to grow in environments that don’t suit them or that disconnect them from the web of life around them. Meadow Pace invites us to listen to the land and the plants, and to build naturalistic, deeply integrated and resilient plant communities.

Our meadows differ significantly from conventional landscapes and for very good reasons. Specifically, we attempt to mimic natural plant communities by planting as full as we can, leaving no or as little empty space as possible. We plant seeds and plugs in a way that allows plants to sort out their own spaces and grow in relationship to one another – both in the space, and across time through a process called succession. We can follow their lead and support their progress through targeted plant identification and weeding.

Understanding this allows us to give the meadow the patience it needs to fully build out and integrate its community, therefore creating a thriving, local ecosystem and beautiful display for all. Let’s all integrate a bit more of a Meadow Pace into our lives and landscapes.🌿

Join Wildbud Natives and on January 24th for an engaging class on restoring our creekbanks, land, and habitats using native plants. Wildbud owner Nathan Buchanan will be discussing how planting live stakes and bare root native plants during dormancy can be a cost-effective, lower-labor, but very high-impact way of stewarding our land and waterways.

If you plan to attend, go ahead and pre-order live stakes of your own and pick them up at the class. Use the links in our bio to register for the class and/or order your stakes.

Class will meet at Winding Stair Farm in Franklin, NC on 1/24 at 10:00 am. It’s going to be a good one, don’t miss out!
