Hard weather has a way of bringing out design flaws. This heat pump has This wire feature over the condenser inlet. Im not sure of its purpose but it sure worked well to hold an ice buildup far enough from the coil to prevent the defrost cycle from melting it, yet it worked really well blocking airflow. I think water from melting snow on top of the unit ran onto the wire grid and froze. Consequently the heat pump kept cycling into defrost and wasn't heating the home enough prompting a low heat call.

This week's challenge. Home built in 1638. Customer wants to add air conditioning . Not a straight wall or floor in the place and the construction was completely random. Obviously historical preservation and esthetic is a priority. Even outdoor unit must be hidden from view due to historic zoning. I love this type of challenge!

Putting the finishing touches on a hybrid geothermal loop
Closed loop in the building, open loop to ground via plate and frame heat exchanger. Modulation of groundwater valve keeps loop at 38 to 70 degrees. Sometimes the loop acts as a thermal battery, storing heat removed from one zone till another uses it, never needing groundwater flow.

I guess if your going to sell overpriced outerwear you may as well build an overpriced clothes rack ! I'm looking at about 500 dollars in copper and fittings to hold up those jackets !
