Wildtype Native Plant Nursery

Wildtype Native Plant Nursery Wildtype Design, Native Plants & Seed was established in 1996. Therefore the vast majority of our plants are grown from wild seed stock.

For the past 25 years we have specialized in growing plants native to Michigan, from Michigan genotypes. We grow trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers typical of Michigan woodlands, wetlands and prairies. It is our objective to propagate nursery stock with enough genetic diversity to create self-sustaining populations. This is what we mean when we say our plants are borne to be wild.Wildtype also

provides ecological services for public, commercial and residential projects focusing on restoration and preservation of native landscapes.

Nancy Ferguson has been a fixture at Wildtype for 20 years. If you attend our sales, you might find her helping customers. But, day to day she is among the most skilled transplanters, particularly the woody plants.

Nancy is direct, unrestrained, funny, and supportive of all the staff. She embodies the culture that makes this place tick. She also bakes these double chocolate cookies laced with hot chili pepper – amazing. Every year she tells us she is not coming back – we just ignore her. Thank you, Nancy.

We missed an important milestone last year: Laura Daune has been working at Wildtype for 26 years. If you've ever come to a public sale, you've seen Laura in the command-and-control position where customers check out. But on a regular day, Laura ensures our horticultural practice is always improving and inventory is shipshape. She also does much of our on-site seed collecting. Thank you and congratulations.

Why do we use the abbreviation spp. after Amelanchier (serviceberry) in our catalog and labels? The serviceberry we grow is from seed we typically collect from southern lower Michigan populations where both Amelanchier arborea and Amelanchier laevis grow and often grow in the same area. They commonly hybridize and even if we are certain of the ID of a particular tree we have collected, we do not have control or any idea what species pollinated it. Therefore, we leave it ambiguous by using spp. which means species’ plural. Does it matter with respect to its use in your landscape? Functionally, these two species are similar enough where we do not think it matters.
