Every season we change out our potscaping scheme. Sometimes multiple changeovers in a single season. Summer is when we go all out and containers are everywhere, flanking doors and entryways, in groups located in sun and in shade. Tucked into garden beds and arranged in outdoor rooms and structures. Many groupings are of collections:begonias/ succulents / Amorphophallus / ferns / citrus / Caladium just to name a few. Haven’t counted them all this summer but there are usually 300 plus. (Don’t ask how long it takes to water them all)

It’s summer and time to pull some of the succulents and cacti collection out to the terrace. This collection loves full sun and can handle a couple of missed waterings. Many of these we offer all season. At summer’s end they return to the greenhouse or are@moved to a sunny windowsill.

Unwrapped the palms today. Always a late winter ritual. We have been growing Trachycarpus fortunei (Windmill Palm) in the garden for close to 30 years we have lost some and others have done exceptionally well. Rated to be hardy in zones 7 to 10 we find that a light covering helps them retain all their leaves. These particular palms are cross’s of the hardiest, with breeding stock from Virginia, Northern India, and Bulgaria. With their provenance coming from the hardiest palms in the world we could leave them unprotected but as a precaution we cover them in early January and uncover late February or March. These palms have survived negative numbers with just a little leaf scorch. Hopefully we will have them back in production soon at the nursery.

Some of our topiary have been in training for close to 20 years ( yes the big ones from our collection.). Our plants in production start as rooted cuttings and take between 4 to 18 months to get to a sellable size
