WCIA TOTAL: Our viewing area has seen an astonishing 73 tornadoes this year. Our previous record was 60, just last year.

Unbelievable. 9 out of our 10 top cities in our weather coverage areas have had direct hits from tornadoes. We've had some areas hit twice, and we've even had one spot hit 3 separate times.

What a wild, WILD year it has been.

CHARLESTON, IL – Under the direction of Mayor Brandon Combs, the City of Charleston has declared a local state of emergency in response to significant storm damage impacting the community.

City officials are actively coordinating response and recovery efforts with the Coles County Emergency Management Agency and partner agencies. The storm has resulted in numerous downed power lines, fallen trees, and debris-covered roadways throughout the city, creating hazardous conditions for residents and motorists.

Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay off the roadways whenever possible to allow emergency personnel, utility crews, and public works staff to safely conduct response and recovery operations.

The public is urged to exercise caution, remain alert for hazardous conditions, and avoid any downed power lines or obstructed areas. Residents should continue to monitor official City of Charleston and Coles County Emergency Management Agency communications for updates and additional information.

The City appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents as crews work diligently to restore services and clear affected areas.

Rural King Supply continues to be a good partner to individuals and businesses

The severe weather today has impacted our associates and customers in Charleston, Mattoon and surrounding locations. Our thoughts and prayers are that everyone safe and speedy recovery on storm damage.

To ensure the safety of our Charleston associates, we did close the store early on 6/17. Currently, we are unsure of the open time in the morning of Thursday the 18th, as the city is working diligently to restore power.

To help those impacted, our Mattoon store will stay open to midnight on 6/17 to assist customers. We have associates that are prepared to help in any way possible.
