This homeowner was dealing with severe turf loss and soil erosion in their backyard because excessive shade from the trees prevented healthy grass growth. Over time, the erosion began contributing to foundation issues and left the yard muddy and unusable after rain.

After removing the tree, we completed a stump grind to fully open the area up for new sod and proper turf restoration. Now the backyard can dry out properly, support healthy grass growth, and become a functional space for the family again.

The Dangers of “Volcano Mulching”

Mulch is meant to protect and benefit your trees, but when it’s piled high against the trunk like a volcano, it can actually do more harm than good.

Over-mulching traps excessive moisture around the trunk and root flare, creating the perfect environment for:
• Trunk decay and rot
• Girdling roots that slowly choke the tree
• Insect and fungal problems
• Oxygen restriction to critical root systems
• Long term decline and structural instability

A tree’s root flare should always be visible and able to “breathe.” Proper mulch application looks more like a flat donut, not a volcano. Leave a 1-2-inch space between the mulch and the tree trunk to avoid rot.

✅ Recommended mulch depth: 2–3 inches
❌ Never pile mulch directly against the trunk

The Hidden Damage of “Lion Tailing” Your Trees

This tree on the left is a perfect example of what happens when improper pruning practices remove too much interior growth and foliage, a technique commonly called lion tailing. While it may look “clean” at first, this type of pruning actually weakens the tree over time.

Why is lion tailing harmful?
• Excess weight is pushed to the ends of branches
• Limbs become more vulnerable to storm failure and breakage
• Interior canopy protection is lost, increasing sunscald stress
• Trees respond with weak, rapid regrowth
• Overall structure, health, and lifespan decline

Proper pruning is about improving structure, balance, and long term health, not stripping a tree bare.

🚨 Emergency Tree Removal – McKinney, TX🚨

This week, our team responded to an emergency situation in McKinney where a tree with three co-dominant leaders failed, sending two large leaders onto two separate homes.

We were on-site the very next day with a crane and the right equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently.

In the photos you’ll see one of our Certified Arborists executing proper rigging techniques alongside the crane, while our crew worked diligently on the ground to cut, chip, and clear debris with precision and care.

Situations like this are exactly why experience, training, and the right equipment matter.
