When people think about severe weather in North Texas, they usually think about tornadoes.
And May is typically our most active tornado month of the year.
But here’s what surprised me.
There were zero tornadoes recorded in North Texas during May.
Yet it was still one of our most active weather months.
Why?
Lightning.
My Tempest weather station in McKinney recorded more than 14,000 lightning strikes within a 25 mile radius during May. In fact, it was the second most active lightning month I recorded since installing the station in 2020.
And unfortunately, we saw the impacts.
Multiple homes across North Texas were damaged by lightning. Some suffered major electrical damage. Others caught fire. Families were displaced. Repairs will take months, If not years.
Most people don’t spend much time thinking about lightning.
Until it hits close to home.
