Today was meh. I worked in my studio for the first time in weeks and felt like it might as well have been my first time painting ever. Nothing I did was working and most every attempt was scrapped or wiped clean. Sharing this because I want to normalize the “off days”. I think one of the best lessons I’ve learned as an artist is that sometimes we make crap. However, the most precious commodity - our time - is never wasted when we are engaging in creation. I heard once that we should think of our artistic failures not as trash but as compost, an essential nourishment to the soil from which all that we will create blooms forth. And so we try again tomorrow.

Happy Grazing Cows, 18x32 oil on panel.

This is a great example of how I sometimes composite several reference photos into one painting. In this case, from a hike with our friends in California in the lush green hills behind their house. See if you can recognize from these photos what went into the finished painted piece.

Bike Shop, 8x10 oil on panel

I’ve been pretty quiet on here recently but that’s because I’ve been working my t**h off in the studio. My first spring show is this weekend! Arts in Bloom in my hometown of McKinney. . I’ve been really inspired by our recent trip to California, including the delightful storybook coastal town, Carmel-by-the-sea.

Traditional Swedish Dinning Room. 12x16, oil on linen panel.

Another painting inspired by photos my friend took on a recent trip to Sweden. I absolutely fell in love with those decorated walls and that horsewoman painting in the middle, I had to paint it. Thanks so much Tiff!

Swedish Beds. 11x14, oil on panel.

There’s something about Scandinavian interiors that I can’t get enough of. I went to Copenhagen many years ago, but I have yet to travel to many of these places. Luckily friends and family have traveled to various Scandinavian locations and, with permission, I use photos they’ve shared as references or to draw inspiration. This first one was a room in Sweden captured by my friend, . What I wouldn’t give to curl up for a winter nap here. Hopefully I’ll be able to visit these places myself soon!

Day 31 . We’ve made it to the end of this long month and this drawing/painting from life challenge! 🎉

My husband was kind enough to let me sketch his hand for a bit while he read next to me. I don’t do enough figure drawing, perhaps I should incorporate the practice into a weekly thing? Figure work Friday, maybe? It’s definitely something I’d like to focus on more going forward.
