Hale and Hines Nursery has been recognized several times for our irrigation practices, including a feature in Nursery Management Magazine in 2011. Pumps were set up near Charles Creek and the Collins River that transport water to plants throughout the nursery.

Our first container tree production began in the spring of 2003. Since we have a moderate climate in middle Tennessee, we are able to ship container trees all over the country and any time throughout the year. We were proud to be quoted as “the top container grower in the country” in a 2017 edition of Greenhouse Management Magazine.

We now have 200 acres of container production, primarily large shade and flowering trees in 15, 30 and 45 gallon containers. We produce a large range of shade trees and flowering trees, including 70 Maple varieties (43 of which are Japanese Maples), 32 deciduous and evergreen Magnolias varieties, 19 Redbud varieties, 32 flowering Dogwood varieties, 16 Oak varieties, 21 upright evergreen varieties, and 18 Gingko varieties.

Hale and Hines Nursery’s annual, in-house grafting operation has been in full swing the past few weeks. Our specially trained team cuts and fuses nearly 100,000 trimmings together every year before they are painted on top to help the plant retain moisture and then placed in geothermal greenhouses. By doing this, our nursery is able to provide the best possible prices for our customers on specialty trees.

Hale and Hines Nursery was founded in 1978 by the late J.T. Hale and his son-in-law, Terry Hines (pictured). In the beginning, the pair specialized in field grown (B&B) trees on 10 acres. Terry has remained the president of Hale and Hines for the past 43 years, and has continued to strive for excellence in his field grown as well as container production that has expanded into several hundred acres.
