It’s National Pollinator Week! Over the next week, we’ll share information about pollinators and how to help.
First of all, what is a pollinator? We’re so glad you asked! A pollinator is an animal, insect, or bird that moves pollen from male to female plant structures. This transfer is vital for fertilization, enabling the formation of seeds, fruits, and nuts. Pollinators include bees, wasps, flies, butterflies, moths, ants, beetles, hummingbirds, small mammals, and more.
Why are they so important? Here’s some of our favorite fun facts:
About 80% of flowering plants require pollination
1 out of every 3 bites of our food comes from something that has been pollinated
Pollinators are part of the web of life by being food for other birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals
Pollinators keep other insects in balance
Join us tomorrow as we’ll talk more about bees, flies, and wasps!
And don’t forget: celebrate Pollinator Day with us on Saturday! From 11-2, we’re hosting a Pollinator Day celebration, complete with photo ops, face painting, walks & talks, kids crafts, and more. Located in our Nursery, home to trees, shrubs, & perennials, across the street from the main store.
