Here is an example of a candle that was lit without trimming the wicks. Let me explain why this is a big deal!
When I test candles I actually do two sets; one that has had proper candle care and a second that I do not trim the wick because I discovered that SO MANY people don't trim their wick. Your safety is important to me, so I want to be sure I'm doing everything I can to replicate actual use. Trimming your wick regularly is so important for longevity, safety and enjoying your scent to the bottom of the jar.
If you aren't trimming your wick (every time) you are allowing the temperature to rise beyond the intended range which can eat through your wax up to 18% faster! You are literally wasting money by skipping this step to enjoy your favorite candle.
This also affects safety because if you are allowing the heat to get out of control you can unintentionally create a huge hazard by risking burns on the hot glass, broken glass from heat stress, fumes from overheated fragrance and wax that aren't present at lower temps, soot, and under just the right circumstances....FIRE.
Finally, it is impossible to keep the fragrance in your wax at those higher temperatures. I have always poured my candles with fragrance throughout instead of adding the unscented "foot" at the bottom to secure the wick. Some companies prefer using that method to save on fragrance oil, but I am a firm believer in creating a solid quality product and I felt you deserved a candle that gave you joy until the last drop. That only works if you care for your candle in a way that allows it to function as intended.
Help me to help you enjoy the cleanest candle formula by following a couple simple "rules". I'll even explain why, so you see the reasoning behind them.
1. Trim your wick EVERY time you burn. Yes, EVERY time. I'm not being a fear monger. Really EVERY time. 1/4" is the ideal length.
2. The first time you light your new candle be sure you have enough time to let it melt ALL THE WAY to the outside of the container it's in. (This will prevent tunneling because wax has a memory!)
3. Set a timer. The recommended burn time is only 4 hours at a time. This keeps the wick from falling into your wax, saves you from wick exhaustion, keeps the heat at a safe temperature, and keeps you from experiencing "mushroom wick" as pictured below. Mushroom wick is how heat turns even the cleanest candles into soot machines.
4. Keep your candle out of drafts and away from curtains and other flammable items. Think of softly blowing on a campfire when you are getting it going. You know how the embers glow? That's because the additional airflow creates the perfect environment for the heat to grow! This happens on the tiny surface of your wick when a draft is blowing across it.
If you want to enjoy your candle longer than 4 hours you have some options. You can blow it out and wait until it's solid and the container is cool to the touch, then TRIM YOUR WICK before you relight it. You can also have more than one candle for that location in your space and alternate when you need to extinguish one.
The bottom line is, you can enjoy your candles however you want, but if you want a safe and clean burn that keeps your fragrance and candle around as long as possible....TRIM YOUR WICK EVERY BURN! I care about your safety and your enjoyment of my product.
