Last night was quite the reminder that hail season isn't over ! (And won't be for about a month)
For our friends and neighbors who caught the
worst of it, here are a few tips for the days ahead.
1. Don't panic!
If you have ever endured a significant hail storm, it sounds
like the world is coming to an end. Your home is built
to withstand a beating like that for the most part. If
windows or skylights are broken through, you
will need to get those covered ASAP. Have a roofing professional assess the damage.
Don't panic or you may become easy prey for a storm chaser or thief.
2. Secure your home.
Typically, the water will come in from broken skylights, broken windows or something that got broken or cracked on the roof. Have any openings covered with tarps ASAP.
3. Refuse to be pressured!!
If you're in a hard-hit zone, you will have 10-20 different roofers at your door in the first 24 hours after the storm. Some of them are crooks, some of them are out of state
storm chasers and some of them are good honest
guys out working to make a living.
Unless you have prior experience dealing with
a company or a have referral from someone you trust,
you have no way of knowing who is standing on
your doorstep. A high-pressure salesman
is a good sign that you need to wait.
4. Go with someone you trust!
There are many ways to establish trust. Do you have previous experience with a contractor who did a good job for you?
I am always happy to share a list of prior customers you can call to find out how I served them.
I am a certified installer for CertainTeed roofing products and carry General Liability Insurance so your property is protected when my crews are their doing work.
5. File your claim and get your property restored.
If you have an older roof and some other things that
need attention around the house, a good hail storm
can actually be your friend! A general contractor like
me can help you take care of the roof, gutters, paint
stain, fences, garage doors, windows and just about
anything else that was damaged in the storm. If you
don't panic and you work the process well, what seems
like a negative experience will ultimately work out to
your advantage.
