Yesterday and today I attended and spoke at the Arkansas State Master Gardener Conference north of Little Rock in Conway. My friend Dr. Jared Barnes, horticulture professor at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas spoke today and began with this song as he alway does. His songs related to his topic and the region of the country he’s speaking in. He is an excellent speaker and teacher and never ceases to amaze me with his talents. Stay tuned on my page for more photos of the event.

Photos from Ray and Jean Burgess’ garden, Huntsville Alabama, hardiness zone 8. I was in their garden the same day in 2017 leading the Madison County Master Gardeners own a garden tour of Huntsville. It was great to see them and their garden again.

Photos taken during Friday morning’s tours as part of the Dixie Regional Hosta Convention in Huntsville Alabama hosted by Hosta Society of North Alabama.

The Burgess grows their hosta in the grounds as well as pots. Without the root competition from trees they grow faster and larger in pots. See Saturday evening’s post for details on growing hosta in pots.

Stay tuned this week for more photos of other wonderful gardens we visited.

What are the chances of this!

Dean Jones is headed back home to Little Rock from a a business trip to Indianapolis and his layover just happen to be in Nashville. Dean is formally of Wilson County Tennessee (the county east of Nashville) and served as the Wilson County Master Gardener president. He is attending Arkansas Sate Master Gardener Conference in Conway where I’m speaking today and tomorrow.

Last year I had the opportunity to visit over 50 wonderful gardens in the Memphis area as part of Experience Memphis and Cooper Young Garden Walk. I was blown away by their beauty and had absolutely no idea there were so many fantastic private gardens in Memphis. There are only a couple more weekends left this year. Don’t miss it.

Linda Barrette’s garden, Guntersville Alabama, hardiness zone 8.

Yesterday Linda invited attendees of the Dixie Regional Hosta Convention hosted by Hosta Society of North Alabama to visit her beautiful garden on the banks of Lake Guntersville.

Linda grows her hosta in the grounds as well as pots. Without the root competition from trees they grow faster and larger in pots. See yesterday’s evening’s post for details on growing hosta in pots.

Stay tuned this week for more photos of other wonderful gardens we visited.

What a great Friday and Saturday in Huntsville, Alabama. I was delighted and honored to be part of the Dixie Regional Hosta Convention hosted by Hosta Society of North Alabama along with my buddy Lucas Holman from Holman Farms. It will take me several days to get all the photos posted from event, so stay tuned.

I spent last night with my friend Mary Terrell in beautiful Lake Guntersville, south of Huntsville. I was in her garden by 5:45 AM taking pictures (see this morning’s post for early morning photos) and shortly after begin dead heading the dayliles in preparation for today’s tour.

It’s always a joy staying with Mary and seeing her beautiful garden. She loves all plants but especially daylilies and hosta.

She grows her hosta in pots as I do which prevents them from being devoured by voles. Also without the root competition from trees which provide necessary shade, they grow faster and larger. Potting media is mainly finely ground pine bark sold as soil conditioner or pine fines. Soil conditioner drains well which is important for them to be winter hardy in a pot above ground. Hosta love cold temperatures and there’s no danger of them freezing from the cold as long as the soil drains well. I have had hosta in pots that remain outdoors year-round at my house for more than 20 years. In areas where temperature freeze and thaw it’s best to use pots that won’t freeze and crack such as plastic, fiberglass, concrete or cast-iron.

Stay tuned all this week for more photos of other wonderful gardens we visited.

What a beautiful garden and view to wake up to! I had a great day yesterday attending and speaking at the Dixie Regional Hosta Convention hosted by the Hosta Society of North Alabama in Huntsville, AL.

I spent the last night with Mary Terrell on Lake Gunnersville. If you’re attending the convention and planning to visit the self-guided gardens this afternoon, you’re in for a treat. With over 600 different cultivars of daylilies and over 325+ cultivars of hosta among other beautiful plants it’s a show place.
