Some projects are beautiful because of how they look. Others are special because of the story behind them.

We completed this koi pond earlier this spring after Mother Nature gave us just about everything she had.

Originally scheduled to be completed before winter, an early arrival of cold weather followed by a winter that seemed determined to stay put turned this into a much longer journey than anyone anticipated. Mud, snow, frozen ground… we saw plenty of all three.

But looking at it today, those challenges are hardly a memory.

This pond was designed very intentionally around the homeowners and the way they wanted to experience their outdoor space.

With mobility challenges to consider, we elevated the pond so they could get close to the water directly from the patio rather than having to look down into a traditional below-grade pond. Just as importantly, we positioned and shaped it to provide beautiful views from inside the home, allowing the pond and its inhabitants to be enjoyed throughout the seasons.

The rear of the property drops away dramatically, which gave us another unique opportunity. From several vantage points, the far edge of the pond seems to disappear into the landscape, creating an almost natural vanishing-edge effect.

And then there are the real stars of this project—the koi.

These aren't simply fish in a backyard pond. Many of these large koi have been with the homeowners for years and are very much part of the family. Creating a beautiful, natural environment for them while making the pond more accessible and enjoyable for their owners was at the heart of the design.

Today, it feels as though the pond has always belonged here.

A wonderful addition to an already beautiful landscape—and proof that sometimes the projects that challenge us the most are also some of the most rewarding.
