An island should do more than look beautiful.

It should create useful prep space, place storage within reach, provide comfortable seating, support serving and entertaining, and preserve clear paths through the kitchen.

In this Mequon remodel, a larger island became the functional center of the room—with additional work surface, a second sink, deep storage, and seating for everyday gathering.

Because the best island is not simply the biggest one.

It is the one designed around how the kitchen is actually used.

Three changes made a meaningful difference in this Mequon kitchen.

1. Cooking, cleanup, and prep were organized into clearer work zones.
2. Full-height cabinetry and deep drawers placed storage closer to where it is used.
3. A larger island added prep space, a second sink, and seating for everyday gathering.

The result is more than a visual transformation. It is a kitchen designed to support the way the household cooks, gathers, and moves through the room.

What changed in this Mequon kitchen and why?

The existing room already offered substantial cabinetry and counter space. However, prep, cooking, and cleanup were concentrated around the perimeter, the projecting peninsula occupied the central circulation area, and a smaller window limited daylight at the primary work zone.

The new layout gives the kitchen a clearer center.

A larger island provides additional prep space, a second sink, and seating. The cooktop and wall ovens create more distinct cooking zones. Full-height cabinetry and deep drawers organize storage, while the wider window and pendant lighting make the room feel brighter and more intentional.

The result is more than a visual update. It is a kitchen designed to work better for everyday cooking, gathering, and family life.

Thinking about remodeling next year? The planning does not have to wait until the calendar changes.

An early conversation creates time to:

• Clarify the project scope and priorities
• Explore different layout possibilities
• Establish a realistic investment range
• Develop drawings and refine the design
• Coordinate product and material selections
• Prepare the project details needed for construction

Starting earlier gives each decision time to develop thoughtfully and in the right sequence—from understanding how the space should work to coordinating the elements that will bring the design together.

If a complete kitchen, bathroom, or lower-level remodel is part of your plans for next year, start the planning conversation with Design Tech Remodeling.

A successful remodel depends on how well design, planning, and construction stay connected.

At Design Tech Remodeling, designers guide the early layout and product decisions. Before construction begins, the homeowner, designer, and project manager align on the schedule, communication, site logistics, and quality expectations.

The project manager then carries that plan forward—coordinating carpenters and trade partners while keeping the homeowner informed through completion.

That continuity helps preserve the design intent and homeowner priorities from the first conversation to the final walkthrough.

Kelly O’Connor’s experience with her basement remodel reflects the value of that connected approach.

Finishing a lower level involves more than selecting flooring, paint, and furniture.

Before construction begins, consider:

• What is the space’s primary purpose?
• Which activities need their own zones?
• How will existing mechanical systems affect the layout?
• Where will natural and artificial light come from?
• Will you need a bathroom or guest area?
• What should be kept in organized storage?
• Which materials offer the right balance of comfort and durability?
• What existing conditions and local requirements need professional review?

Our new blog explores the decisions that can help turn an underused lower level into a thoughtful extension of your home.

One lower level can serve many parts of everyday life.

A comfortable family lounge.
An entertainment area.
A private guest retreat.
A flexible space for work or wellness.
Organized storage that keeps everything in its place.

The most successful design starts by deciding which zones matter most to your household.

Which one would transform how you use your home?

What could your lower level become?

The best answer begins with how your household needs more space—not simply what can fit downstairs.

A thoughtfully planned lower level could include:

• A family room for everyday connection
• A comfortable guest suite
• A quieter home office
• A dedicated fitness room
• An entertainment or game area
• A bar or kitchenette
• Multi-purpose storage
• A convenient bathroom

The right combination can support several needs while still feeling like one cohesive part of the home.

Which space would most change how your household uses its home?

Save these ideas for your lower-level planning conversation, then explore more completed projects through the link in bio.
