A Proclamation on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, 2021

Since time immemorial, American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians have built vibrant and diverse cultures — safeguarding land, language, spirit, knowledge, and tradition across the generations. On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, our Nation celebrates the invaluable contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples, recognizes their inherent sovereignty, and commits to honoring the Federal Government’s trust and treaty obligations to Tribal Nations.

Our country was conceived on a promise of equality and opportunity for all people — a promise that, despite the extraordinary progress we have made through the years, we have never fully lived up to. That is especially true when it comes to upholding the rights and dignity of the Indigenous people who were here long before colonization of the Americas began.

New Hampshire voters, in case you are wondering about the political signs saying Joyce Craig is going to raise taxes, here is what I read on a fact-check from WMUR:

"The ad claims Craig tried to override the tax cap and tried to raise taxes six times.

According to PolitiFact, all six years she was mayor, Craig's proposed budgets raised taxes to levels within the voter-approved tax cap. In the year that the ad says Craig overrode the tax cap, 2019, city aldermen had a veto-proof majority, meaning Craig couldn't have changed the vote to exceed the tax cap.

"What happened in two years is the city did break through that tax cap, but it was because the board had a supermajority, and so there was no way for the mayor to veto those tax cap breaches," Jacobson said."

When most of us think of "raising taxes" we think personal income tax (or at least I do), but New Hampshire has a flat 3.00 percent individual income tax rate levied ONLY on interest and dividends income, and a 7.5 percent corporate income tax rate. New Hampshire does not have a sales tax. New Hampshire has a 1.61 percent effective property tax rate on owner-occupied housing value.

I hope that more sensible issues like women's reproductive rights, housing, public education, sensible gun laws and protecting the rights of ALL citizens are the things on everyone's mind on election day - we cannot afford Kelly Ayotte...

Please vote for Joyce Craig for Governor

Across our state, we’re seeing an increase in food inaccessibility and insecurity. This last week, New Hampshire House Democrats attempted to pass an expansion of the school lunch program. We hoped to take a strong step toward addressing this issue.

New Hampshire Republicans blocked progress.

We hoped to raise the eligibility cap to include children from families making up to 250% of the federal poverty guidelines, short of where we would like to be with universal access to school lunches but a significant step forward…and a compromise. After all, earlier this year, House Republicans raised the eligibility for private school vouchers to 500% of the federal poverty guidelines.

New Hampshire Republicans blocked progress.

Feeding kids should be a no-brainer, but our colleagues on the other side of the aisle don’t seem to agree – they are out of step with Granite State values. We must break up the status quo, flip the State House, and feed the kids.

Free school lunches are an especially salient and emotional topic for House Democrats this week. Our dear friend, State Representative Art Ellison, a lifelong advocate for feeding kids and solving childhood hunger, passed away this month.

We’re carrying this initiative forward in his memory.

If New Hampshire Republicans don’t see the importance of this mission, we need to unseat them and flip the House blue, so we have a majority that does.

Thank you,
Laura Telerski
