Last week my wife and I visited Amrad Manufacturing in Palm Coast, FL. Modern Cooling & Heating has been selling Amrad products for almost 20 years. Their capacitors have a 5 year warranty, are backed by exceptional quality service and are American made. They perform over 100 steps in quality control for each capacitor they manufacture. We were given a tour of their entire manufacturing process from start to finish, so we saw all of those steps firsthand. The advantages of getting a second opinion.

We received a call this morning to come look at a broken air conditioner another HVAC company condemned. I do not know the name of this particular company. Sometimes we are told and sometimes not. After looking the system over we found an electrical short in the low voltage (control) wire to the outdoor unit had blown the low voltage fuse on the indoor control board. We got the short repaired and the fuse replaced, and the unit was working just fine.

Why did the other company condemn it? Probably because the system was installed in 1996. Just because your system is old, it doesn't mean it has to be replaced when a minor repair can get it up and running again. No one can tell you how long your HVAC system will last.

It is time to schedule your spring air conditioning maintenance check. Our maintenance checks consist of blowing out the condensate drain lines, changing filters, cleaning the condenser coil, checking all the electrical components and checking the refrigerant charge.

Our hourly rate is $150/hr. regardless of the number of systems you have, plus a $10 discount on labor for a/c checks.

We have installed a few systems running on the new refrigerant, R-454B. While R-454B is classified as flammable it is still very safe for use. Don't let all the new warning stickers on the indoor coil worry you. The new units come with a leak dissipation system installed inside the indoor unit that will automatically turn off the a/c or heat in the event of a refrigerant leak and turn on the indoor blower motor to keep the leaking refrigerant from gathering in one spot. There is also not enough refrigerant in the system to cause any issues with flammability inside of the conditioned space of the home in the event of a refrigerant leak. But hopefully there will be less leaking evaporator coils now that the evaporator coils are rated for much higher refrigerant pressures even though R-454B operates near the same pressures as R-410A. In comparison, Lennox R-454B evaporator coils are rated for 640psi instead of 480psi for R-410A.

Having a good carbon monoxide detector/monitor in your home is very important when you have gas burning appliances or fireplaces. The elderly, young children, pregnant women and those in poor health are the most susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning. I saw this monitor reading 7ppm earlier today, so I got my Fieldpiece detector out to verify.

This Defender monitor will display low levels of carbon monoxide starting at 5ppm with visible alerts at 9ppm after 10 minutes and audible alerts at 15ppm after 60 minutes and 25ppm after 30 minutes. I recommend this monitor in particular even though it costs around $200 online and is only good for 5 years. You cannot buy this brand at Home Depot or Lowes. Most of the carbon monoxide detectors off the shelf are UL listed and have to conform to different standards than this non UL listed monitor.

A UL listed Kidde monitor from Home Depot does not admit an audible warning until 70ppm after 60-240 minutes, 150ppm after 10-50 minutes or 400ppm after 4-15 minutes. Most of the Kidde monitors do not display the carbon monoxide level.

However, any carbon monoxide monitor is better than no carbon monoxide alarm.

I have also posted a copy of the National Comfort Institute's Carbon Monoxide Levels & Risks chart. If a parking garage full of vehicles emitting 2000+ppm cannot exceed 25ppm then why should your house have to be at 70ppm for over an hour before you get an alert.

System replacement last week. We raised the height of the unit off the ceiling joists for easier service and better condensate drainage. On the backside we removed a ductboard triangle and ran each duct seperately from the unit for better airflow.

These three condensers were jammed in between the fence and the wall. You had to climb over the first unit to service the second and similar to service the third. A new concrete slab was poured at the back of the house, so we could move two of the units.
