Looking for a big splash this year? Check out our Perennial Banana Trees, Elephant Ears, and Cannas. Plant and enjoy! They require nothing more! In a large container or in the ground, they will shine all summer in the heat and drought.
The Bannana trees can grow in our area up to about 7 feet. Then, before or shortly after the first frost of the winter, cut them off at ground level and cover the stumps with mulch or compost. We can't guarantee they will come back, but ours always do! And.... we never intentionally water them. Yet, they thrive even in the heat and dry soil. They can be planted in large containers, or in the ground, where they will produce new shoots.
The Elephant Ears don't bloom, but they continuously produce new sprouts and can reach up to 4 feet tall. In a pot, you can use them as an accent and plant petunias, sunpatients, vinca, or other annuals around them.
We have cannas that can grow up to about 4 feet in yellow and red. These can be cut to the ground in the fall, and they will come back. They are great in the ground, or in a large planter. Near the pool, around the home or garage, they are hardy and easy! Again, we don't water these. They bloom all summer! You can cut off spent buds, but it is not necessary. In the ground, they will multiply, creating a growing display.
