Presenting the Australian Tree Fern, a very unique and astonishing beauty. It is the fastest growing tree fern around, is a great container specimen in our neck of the woods. Likes partial sun but must be winter protected, but well worth the extra care. Bring it inside in said container and place it by a window in a well lit room once temps get 40 or below. If you’re brave enough to grow it in the landscape protect the trunk come winter and hope for the best.

Round 2 on planting crabapple Malus ‘Evereste’. Put 9 more in the ground with our eldest. He’s a competitor, always competing. Planting crabapples is sport to him. We didn’t talk much, just competed on who could dig the most perfect holes. However, we did manage to discuss Keith Whitley, the WWE, and the gnat situation. Oddly enough, he asked me if I had a cigarette. I asked him if he was smoking these days, and he said, No. I don’t want yellow teeth, but if you have a cigarette I’ll smoke it.

He is also vain. . . and dangerously handsome and tells me he loves me out of the blue and all of the time.

Planted 12 Malus ‘Evereste’ crabapple trees with our youngest this morning out here on the nursery in an effort to make this place a place. We discussed Dire Wolves, Wooly Mammoths, life on Mars, and if Grandaddy Long Legs spin webs. He learned about Jane’s Addiction, root stock and graft unions, and what crabapples taste like when they ain’t quite ripe. I learned there are a million flies per one human on the planet, a statistic somewhat believable considering the current South Georgia gnat situation. It was an educational and meaningful morning. Fruits of labor.

Eden climber and a late May growler. Haven’t seen or heard the sky like this is quite a while. Summer is upon us. Sweat on the spine. Humidity in the air. It finally feels like Southeast Georgia. For a while there she felt like some kind of desert fall. Glad she’s back.

The many phases of the Agapanthus, all of which we find most interesting, even the seed pods are the very definition of ornamental. We have 5 unique varieties here at the nursery and one of the only bicolors on the market, the ever so explosive Agapanthus ‘Fireworks’. They are so easy, require sun and like their roots bound; it stress the plant and signals it to bloom. If you need a last minute gift for our community’s fabulous teachers, an Agapanthus would make a great choice. It’s spectacular planted in mass and makes an elegant specimen in a pot. Bees and hummies love it. We do, too.

Tomorrow starts our Memorial Day Weekend sale. Everything à la nurseria is 20% off.

Beauty among the ruins.

P.S. This is Campsis radicans, a native in our neck of the woods, climbing on an old shack near the Bulloch/Candler county line. You gotta be a bit of a dare devil to plant it. It’s wild, aggressive, some say untamable. But man is it tempting. The hummingbirds love it, literally vanish inside its blooms. We have 8 in stock, planted the others along the nursery fence line and are training some up our light posts because we like to dare the devil around here, we like to try and tame a wild thing. Plant one. We dare you. You never know,, a hundred years from now someone might drive past your abandoned shack, pull over on the side of the road, and sit among the beauty of your ruins. And be moved in a most mysterious way.

Plant something in their memory. Let it root deep in the land they honored.
